I saw one recently called “Dredd” with Carl Urban that I thought was good. Sometimes the dystopia future types are more interesting than the all adventure ones.

Yes the matrix is fantastic but Dune’s lore about the galactic order is great. The matrix is just about earth and AI while Dune is the whole galaxy

To the extent we can make comparisons across media, I think the Dune books are much better science fiction than The Matrix, but I don't think the movies are better sci-fi.

The visuals of the Dune movies are fantastic!! The matrix has better action scenes and the plot and writing are very philosophical but I just think the matrix universe is very limited. But focusing on just the movie The Matrix was really wild in 1999

I like it for its fidelity to the novel. All three of them tried to do justice to the novel but it was just too dense to go from written medium to film medium.

Yeah, there were a lot more I wanted to put in the choice list but there is a limit to the number of choices you can give. I have seen all of these and have 5 of therm on DVD. I like them all in secondary or tertiary positions.

My comment may contain SPOILERS for Interstellar, fair warning.

Interstellar is my favourite too. I rewatched it recently, and as always I struggled to make it through without crying.

When I first watched it as a teenager I was astounded by the spectacle and visuals of Cooper's journey.

Now that I'm older, those things still excite me, but I'm more affected by the relationships in the film. The tension in the crew as they struggle to make the right choices. The betrayal by Dr Brand, when it is revealed that "Plan A" was never possible.

And of course, the relationship between Cooper and his daughter. I'm not a father yet, but I'm reaching an age when I'm thinking about it, and I think that's why this affects me so much. When Cooper departs from Earth, not knowing if he will see Murph again. The video messages he receives after visiting the water world, where he learns that he missed out on most of his children's lives. And of course their eventual reunion when Murph is an old lady in her deathbed.

What that man went through is unimaginably horrible.

Cooper’s hero’s journey is the reason the film is so good. If the journey had been easier, the movie would not have done as well. You would not want to watch it the second or fiftieth time. I have to say the music was really good too.

Hans Zimmer always goes the extra mile with his scores. His music for Interstellar was particularly good though, I agree.

Matrix had a lot of spiritual context as well as adventure. The depth of the movie was astounding. For instance: in one elevator scene, behind Neo, there were some writings on the wall. One said “Allah” in Arabic and one was the initials of Gerdiff (KYM).

As far as I am concerned, 2001 stands as the most ambitious film of all time.
Stanley Kubrick succeeded in bringing to the screen a science fiction masterpiece that is both cosmically expansive and profoundly introspective, with the central subject being nothing less than the evolution of consciousness itself.
The opera works on multiple levels, but its most powerful allure is subliminal, tapping into the subconscious, evoking ancestral memories, and foreshadowing a universal destiny.
Even today, nearly 60 years later, despite immense strides in technology and special effects, one cannot help but be astounded by how far ahead the director was both technically and in terms of screenplay. "2001: A Space Odyssey" embodies the very essence of cinema.

Yes, the last one you watched is strongest in your memory. There is also another recency problem with older movies, like the original “Thing” being forgotten because “Dune 2” is more recent. For instance, 2001: A Space Odyssey was a ground breaking film, but we only see the results of that groundbreaking, now.

James Cameron's “The Abyss” and Jordan Peele's "Nope".

The first one has a very cool theme of the mysteries of the world ocean, and the second one I've rewatched several times and each time got a lot of pleasure from the stylization of 80s sci-fi.

You can add to the list of “Event Horizon” which I consider the best sci-fi horror, as well as “Super 8” in which children are saved from a space monster. Incredibly stylish movie.

Brazil was a very good science fiction movie like big brother in a dystopia but it is a comedy as well. There are even messages like those of the United Nations with the corona virus, "we are all in this together". In the movie it was "Happiness, we are all in this together ". With this kind of messages and other scenes it feels like the movie sometimes is a parody of our everyday lives (and yet it was released in 1985). I highly recommend it.

He also played a role that was quite foreign to his usual role. He was actually kind of funny. Almost as good as the fantasy “Stardust”.

Thanks! I will take note of Stardust, I didn't know this movie. To be honest I don't particularly like Robert de Niro but since people recommended Taxi driver I watched it and didn't particularly enjoy it. The best movie I watched with him was The Deer Hunter. It is about post-Vietnam war trauma. It was really a good movie, not science fiction though

Good call. I use color correcting glasses that are very yellow to filter out blue light. The pill looks red when i am wearing them. I do see orange when I take them off!!

This is another original groundbreaker! A lot of people seem to see it as a favorite. It is my choice for number one, but choosing others tor the next 25 slots would be difficult because there are so many good ones.

I think that there are so many great ones that it is hard to count. Perhaps science fiction movies is one of the larger ganres in terms of the number of movies made in it. They all seem to have some sort of point to make, which makes them more memorable.

I voted Bladerunner for the adaptation to film. Just feel it was done so well, cinematically, casting, score. Dig the noir style to it. Makes a timeless quality. The source is very different and like that it seems like more of a homage.

I would have put Alien as a close second. Aliens was excellent. With Prometheus and Covenant, I'd say it wins the best continuation and sequels.

Seperately, I'd also say Ghost in the Shell and Akira would be a possible top two, but maybe that's not the same as live action.

Ghost in the Shell has been done in live action with Scarlett Johanson. I don’t know if Akira was done in live action but the anime was good. The whole Alien series was good but it was the first one with the alien popping out of Hurt’s chest that set the whole series going. Philip Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is a great novel and the adaption to Bladerunner was well done. You don’t often see such good adaptions.

I liked Scarlett in Under the Skin, among others. Not sure I enjoyed the live action last time I tried, but I think I'll give it another go sometime. The soundtrack by Kenji Kawai makes the original. Mamoru Oshii also did some interesting live actions before GITS. The Red Spectacles, Stray Dog and The Wolf Brigade are all worth a watch, IMO.

I thought Bladerunner was a much better attempt to adapt Dick than Total Recall, but still, wasn't a bad film. Scanner Darkly.. Minority Report. I should give them another watch.

Yes, I have noticed that the number of Dick’s stories that get made into films or TV series is huge. Now, I have heard several mentions of “Under the Skin”, yet haven’t seen it. I wonder if it was made whilst I was traveling and thus missed it. She was also good in “Lucy”.

The sequels are interesting, too. There is a lot of symbolism in them, too. In the second one, the floor of the mansion where Neo has the big fight with The Merovingian’s henchmen is a big Magen David.

the six-pointed star is a very old occult symbol, nowadays used by the dark occult most notably, but it was not always so. the fight with the henchmen can be interpreted as the fight for who sets the symbol's meaning for the population.

bitcoin is another example: most of the deceived population sees it as a scam, whereas the intelligent see it as a tool for freedom. it can still go both ways, a lot of work is being done on both sides to gain control and establish the meaning.
