I would have enjoyed the tea and stayed there after that show of good-will.
I just wonder what people are thinking when they act like this.
When I was an expat, I always tried to learn at least some of the local languages. I know I screwed up a lot, but people were really willing to smile, chuckle and let it go.
They would even try to help me out by correcting me.
The only time this did not work well was when there were two local languages and they were trying to teach me both at once, which was super confusing until I asked them to try teaching me only one. I got the impression my friends thought that was sort of retarded!

That is the difference between traveling on your own, by yourself and traveling with a companion. You and your companion seem to be centered on each other rather than the people around you. I think this is the picture of the ugly tourist. You can see it in group tours where there is a crowd of people that just pay attention to each other and taking pictures.
