The left's alleged 'anti-civilizational' attitudes weren't defeated during Trump's first term. Rather,** they accelerated in opposition to him. Cancel culture, political correctness, "wokeism," and "follow the science" fanaticism all hit their zenith under his administration.
This is an unbelievably stupid way to reason about politics: let the other side's unruly kids win so they don't throw worse tantrums.
Also, this is a hopelessly incorrect description of what's up with wokeism/leftism-gone-nuts and that regardless of what happens today and tomorrow, ESG+woke+transgenderism is dying anyway.
Still, I fear our Reason friend might be right: A Trump win accelerates the culture wars.
If the current trajectory is waning wokeism, wouldn't an acceleration put an end to it faster?
That might just be pedantic nit-picking (which I'm famously in favor of).
reply
always a fan of nit-picking -- accuracy is a virtue!
Hm, no I think the point is that wokeism got lifeblood from opposition, so it basically received a boost from hating a verifiably Bad Man. So voting in him again would send us down a similar 2016-2022 wokeness cycle. Whereas if you vote in the woke kids, wokeness keeps dying.
reply
I take the point, but I don't find it compelling. I don't think there was genuine popular enthusiasm for the woke stuff and people are mostly glad to see it go away.
There's a broader version of this argument, though, that I find completely plausible: The left/establishment/regime will have some insane reaction to Trump winning that has a similarly toxic impact on our culture as the woke stuff did.
reply
To me it's not accelerating wokeism that I fear, it's Trump Derangement Syndrome.
That is, 3-letter agencies are willing to take any and all actions against Trump, no matter how unethical, and regular people looking the other way because it's Trump.
reply
That could definitely escalate and since it never really died down "acceleration" would be an accurate descriptor.
I've been anticipating the Fed letting the bottom fall out of the economy if Trump wins. That might be a better way to disrupt his administration than more hysterical overreactions to him as a person.
reply
Burn it all down.
reply
Wokeism isn't an organic thing that just happened culturally, it's the product of a massively resourced psychological operation.
Let's believe for a moment the people really afraid of Trump, they claim he'll use the military to send them to gitmo for sedition. If the fascist hammer they're afraid of really comes to be, they won't be around any longer to organize those psyops, and wokeism will largely disappear... some won't heal but they won't be effective without a head on the snake.
reply
Did you know that almost no one is actually willing to kill another human?
reply
Not sure I follow the reference, but also disagree with the sentiment
People will kill if they can feel good about themselves doing it, which usually involves an abstraction... Most people just don't want to get their hands dirty because there's no abstraction to blame when a mistake is made
If we want less violence that's important psychology to understand
reply
From what I have learned, it takes a ton of programming, funded by whoever, to get people to a state where they are willing to kill other humans. It's not natural at all. I know this because I know children and babies. Killing other people isn't something we want to do. That's my observation. And I don't need anyone else to confirm that for me.
reply
Kids are however born with instincts of fear, envy, etc
Kids don't generally want to kill animals either, but guess what... If it wasn't natural development for them to we wouldn't be here
reply
I hear you. I know many stories. We all have one. We often refer to his-story. But... Who was telling that one?
Babies don't fear each other is my point. And humans don't have to kill animals to live. Never have. It's a story. Doesn't make it true. Envy is learned in my observation.
reply
stories
Humans are pieces of hardware we can inspect, predictable pieces hardware, hardcoded with canines, a short digestive tract, and broad shoulders with fists attached.
The same instincts that drive us to socialization drive us also to violence, fear, protection, and general self-interest.
This hardware is so predictable it's why stories and spirituality exist, as a temperance/middleware layer to filter the effects of external stimuli on the primal behavior of the underlying hardware.
Envy is learned in my observation.
Relying on your own understanding of these types of things is just hubris, denying what is true won't make it any less true or get us anywhere closer to minimizing violence.
If violence isn't natural, then why does it happen? If we teach it, what taught it to us first?
reply
I'm stupid is all. Science is hard for me. I can never be as smart as you. So I trust myself. Nothing outside of I am that I need to know about. All is one. All is good. Believe whatever you like. I just share my observations sometimes. I am not claiming to be right or to know anything.
Someone, in analyzing why the New York Times -- a very obviously left-wing publication -- kept emphasizing Harris mistakes and running editorials that seemed to undercut their own beliefs, noted that the circulation of the paper between 2016-2020 was incredibly high, so they'd actually benefit from a Trump presidency (as long as they maintained the facade of still being against him).
There's always power in opposition. It goes in both directions; we'll see more woke/left stuff under Trump, just as we're seeing more opposition to leftism under Biden/Harris (and saw the Tea Party under Obama). It makes sense; people fight harder when they're losing, get complacent when they're winning.
It's never about the short-term, though. It's about where things eventually end up.
reply
Regarding Harris mistakes in NYT, that was a pro Kamala super pac giving her advice thru the NY times. Super pac cannot speak to Kamala directly, they have to send code thru a middle man or newspaper
reply
It's all going to be okay.
Look over there
It's a a new way
reply
well, the NYT was actually pretty good for a while there in 2016-17 -- promising to cover more viewpoints and more of the country and featuring conservatives etc. (the Bari Weiss era, let's say).
Then they collapsed and doubled-down on insanity
reply
"Doubling down on insanity" is an apt description of the last 8 years

In my humble opinion you are all wrong. Trump is no friend to Bitcoin. In the long run, his scams and poor character will hurt bitcoin more than it will help.
And as far as the 'woke' stuff that you don't agree with... At least the other choice (dems, kamala, etc) don't want to give everything to the Coinbase-Crypto-Casino by deregulating ungistered securities.
We need 'real reforms' and real education as to what Bitcoin is and why it's money. D Trump doesn't provide any of that, and any attempt to justify his ignorance and scams (NFTs, World Liberty Financial, Trump shoes etc) hurts Bitcoin it does not help it.
reply
Which do you think is better for the world and bitcoin educ, the David Bailey & co having a direct line to the president vs Kamala continuing operation chokepoint 2.0?
reply
It's not Shitcoins and the greenlight to Coinbase to 10x the Shitcoin Casino. Trump is not a Bitcoiner.
All Trump's 'crypto buddies' want deregulation of crypto NOT to help Bitcoin - but to pump Coinbase a giant crypto-casino and they want to be able to do this without going to jail or being sued by the SEC.
I want reforms around Bitcoin, especially around Capital Gains Taxes and commerce as much as anyone so that Bitcoin can be used as intended. But I also believe that D Trump is not the answer.
reply
Trump is NOT a bitcoiner
reply
that doesn't trouble me one bit. Shitcoinery is a one-way funnel to bitcoin.
I'd much rather have these dickheads wallow around in the shitcoin casinos than the heavy hand of government ban/regulate/tax-the-shit-out-of everything.
Of course Orange Man isn't "the answer" for Orange Coin, but between two asshats where one is seemingly favorable and one is seemingly hostile, which should a sane, orange Bitcoiner pick?
reply
I'm not sure... that Shitcoinery is a funnel to Btc. It may be... or may not be. Now I'm not that sure honestly.

I am impressed with the USA. They export their great culture, which is undeniable (music, literature and films); but also how they export the waste they manufacture. Woke culture arrived overwhelmingly in Western countries. Trump will certainly face enormous pressure, especially from the artistic class.

be careful what you ask for. Russia and China, generally speaking have no tolerance for the cultural and economic independence of their citizens. The United States does.
Just because you disagree with it, does not mean that the fact you can disagree with it is worthless. In fact it is worth everything and is what the United States stands for.
reply
I think you expanded too much on what I wrote. I only mentioned Woke culture. For me, everyone has the right to express themselves, but woke culture divides people more than it brings them together. There is no point in the cause being legitimate if the approach is catastrophic.
