Honestly, if I have time for a game, its probably going to be a video game. Although its a bit of mix because mostly I just play card based video games....
There was a time that I used to play video games like hours on end, but really, who has the time anymore? Now, I'll play something on my phone for 10 or 20 minutes if I have some time to kill, but I really can't see myself getting into any type of game that takes any sort of time dedication. Maybe I'll have more time later in life, but for now, that's my answer.
How about you? what games do you play?

A long time ago I came across a quote that said the following.
"There is no such thing as a lack of time (we all have the same 24 hours per day) what does exist is poorly organized time."
That quote, to be honest, changed my way of thinking and perception of time a lot, and mainly about those phrases that we repeat to ourselves a lot on a daily basis, "I just don't have time, I didn't have time, If I have time I'll do it" and some similar ones.
Since I have constantly adopted that phrase in my head, "There is no such thing as a lack of time, only poorly organized time" I have managed to be more effective in many aspects of my daily life. I won't lie and say that I manage time with the precision of a Swiss watch, but it does help me daily to find focus, and to try to organize and carry out my daily activities in a better way.

That's exactly why I'm always able to make time for the important things. My wife, my job, and going to the gym.
Video games can take a back seat for now.
reply
I think it's perfect how you do it, in my case I could say that I do the same, I manage my time week by week in the best way possible, there are good weeks and others not so good, but in the end all good because I keep living, so something gets done... I always liked games, now I play with my daughter, I also make time for my exercises, my studies, my fiduciary work, my wife (I should have named her first, hehe what you have to take care of the most is the wife, otherwise someone else takes care of her ✍️) and as I already mentioned I try to manage my time the way I can, so I allow myself to do a little of several things during my week. ehem I refuse to just be a working slave who sees his wife and son only on weekends and partially. NO! I REFUSE

You have restructured your life away from video games toward something else.
reply
Great reframing story. If you reframe your problems they often solve themselves or make it very easy to stop them. You told yourself to go positive rather than negative, every thing you attracted is positive.

I like 3M Bookshelf games. They are kind of old school and you cannot find them anywhere, anymore. Now, they are incredibly expensive. They still are some of the best games ever made.

I just looked them up, I haven't seen them before. Besides Chess and backgammon I'm unfamiliar with them. Although, the concept looks really cool. The idea of making your game boxes look good on a shelf is pretty awesome, I'm surprised no one else started doing something similar.
reply
3M sold out to another game maker named Avalon Hill. I saw some of the same game titles, but the quality of the pieces and gameboards has drastically declined.
reply
I don't like video games. Cards is the game I like for it doesn't require too much technical skills.
reply
Cards are a lot easier to handle. No special equipment, no electricity and no breakdowns. Skills are necessary for cards, though.
reply
Yes. I think skills are required for every type of game.
Cards is less t less expensive too.
reply
Oh, yes!! A whole lot less expensive. You can also get expansions and offshoots that are interesting.

I never got around to playing D&D. Heard a lot about it, but you had to have some dedicated players to do it. Never had them.
reply
Exactly, it is a game that demands the dedication of all players, especially those who organize the adventure - The famous Master. I played a lot when I was a teenager. I think it really exercises people's imagination and creativity... it's always been a great experience for me
reply
When I was younger, I never heard about it. When I reached my twenties, I heard but there was a lot of scoffing about it. I didn’t try it then. After that, my favorite Science Fiction Bookstore started stocking D&D knickknacks. By then, I couldn’t find people to play! I guess that is the way of the world!
reply
There was always a lot of bullying for sure. A tip since you haven't had this experience, Baldur's gate III is a game that is very faithful to D&D.
reply
Thanks for the tip. I’ll look into it for the next get-together.

I really like action adventure video games with a focus on puzzles and problem solving.
I like a lot of other games as well but if I don't have to think very hard, then I won't really engage with the game.
I also love the statistical probabilities of casino table games like roulette, poker, craps, and sometimes blackjack.

I like some of the cooperative games. This is where all the players are playing as a team against the game itself. There is a great LOTR card game that is really intense problem solving for the team. Lots of ways to loose, one way to win; by working together.

Social, cooperative games.
reply
There are a lot of these in card varieties. The thing is, you have to get three or four others together at the same time to play. That is the problem for some of these games. Great fun, harder to organize.

The format doesn't matter much but I enjoy staring a screen even more than most people.
reply
Are they online as well as on boards and cards?
reply
20 sats \ 2 replies \ @k00b 4 Nov
Yes, it depends on the group. If it’s a group too large for video games, or if the group has women, then we’ll play cards or a board game.
reply
I’ve found a group of about 5 or 6 people interested in playing games is the best. You can get 4 of them to play at almost any time, but not the same 4 every time. They have to be interested in playing, though. Having a variety of this type of game is helpful, too.
reply
We have one player that gets in a mood where he will only try to loose or ruin the play of the game. This is a really difficult situation. This sucks, not playing the game correctly. He also plays hard to win at other times. Which is great! The players have to be in the right mood for a good game.

Connect 4 in a row.

Ok, I have this game!! I have played it with kids a lot. They enjoy it when you make a stupid mistake or they catch you where you loose no matter where you move. I know this game as Arrange Four.

Many years ago I also spent many hours playing video games, as my friend @Aardvark commented.
Nowadays, I focus on learning how to manage my time more effectively ⏱️ so sometimes during the week and especially on Sundays I find time to play Pokemmo with my daughter, it's an online game, which I personally love. It brings back something from my time in Modo Gamer from many years ago and allows me to share with my daughter about this animated series that was very present during my childhood, and connecting that today with my daughter is an incredible thing. It's the only video game that I frequently dedicate a few minutes to.
reply
Playing games with kids is a very important for their development! If you get a chance to play board games with them it is even better.

Yes, thanks for mentioning it, sometimes we play chess ♟️ with 1️⃣ cards, and we are introducing her to "Monopoly Game" if you know of any other good options I would be grateful to read you, and then try to play it with my Family.
reply
You could try Othello, 3M’s Bazaar or High Bid, Clue and a plethora of card games like Hearts, Spades and other trump card games. Card games are good for exercising memory if you teach them they must remember the cards played.

I never did this one either, but I played StarCraft (I believe that was the name) made by Blizzard, too. It was building and fighting.

Oh bring me back to the days of dial up StarCraft Battle.net with my friend and taking up the LAN line to the house for hours until I got yelled at 🙏
reply
I never played on the Battle.net. I always played against the machine. I was introduced to it by my kids. They also introduced me to a game called Diablo and Diablo II. They were real time suckers.

Yeah, I forgot it when I was making the poll. I was only thinking of non-physical games.

Go is considered ancient game or board game? I recently started to play it.
reply
I’m not sure on that point. Go has been around for a very long time and it is a board game or rather a special table game. Was there a reference to it in Genji Monogatari? I can’t remember for sure. I do know it has been in Japan for at least 1400 years.

I am a fan of gambling games. Anyone remember Primedice?
reply
No, I never saw it to remember it. Is it an online game?
