It sounds bad, but when you think about the work it would take to redo that many systems, $212 million doesn't necessarily sound like a lot.
But it does make you wonder, is it possible to design things with future upgradeability in mind, even for totally unpredictable technologies? Maybe if you made every component small and modular
I don't know if it's a lot or a little money, but I'm amazed that they still use floppy disks! Making modular systems out of the old serial port is a possibility. I'm sure someone has already thought of this problem.
