Samurai is down (for the time being) but we still have Join Market and Wasabi. There's also Joinstr which is currently being tested.

If you want to try it out with signet.
Lightning and liquid are both different than a coin join. Coin joins use the base layer to obfuscate your UTXO history with other people.

This will explain them in more detail.

Sorry, I consider myself a "normie" too and haven't had time to test it out yet.
I think if you're running a bitcoin node already there should be a way to switch to signet. Sparrow wallet has an option to "restart in signet" and there should be at least 1 community node you can connect to. As for signet coins if you join the joinstr group in simplex, someone might offer to give you some for testing.

Thanks for this, I will check out coinjoins.org.
Seems like I've heard people talking about lighting and liquid as ways to obstruct chain analysis. It doesn't work that way?

With lightning there's no history of the transaction put into a block. So for that, its quite private. However, if you're using custodial lightning like wallet of satoshi they could be logging all of your transactions. Running your own LN node and using unannounced channels is best, though more resourceful and more learning required.
LSP models like using LN on electrum or phoenix is a good solution for the time being.
As for liquid, it has confidential transactions so the amount is hidden. It is also kinda custodial and it can be linked when you peg in/out. I see it as a good way to put small change into from an onchain TX. It can also be used to refill a LN channel through boltz or another swap service.
