Are the alternatives to Telegram just so hard to use? Because so many groups (that seem like they'd want to be very privacy conscious) are on telegram.
reply
Probably just because of network effects.. people and Bitcoiners already have the app
reply
Interesting.
On the Robosats Telegram group in particular, there's always talk of moving to Simplex, and there is actually a Simplex chat. But 99.9% of the dialog still happens on Telegram.

Very nice. I wasn't aware. What about using a vpn with Telegram?
reply
how exactly do we use these proxies? in telegram proxy settings (desktop) i see server port and user/pass. what proxy type (MTProto,Socks5)? what do i do with the secret?
reply
FFS just clicking on the links it is automatically set the proxy... weather is mobile or desktop client...

Telegram doesn't shill itself as a privacy product
Signal is infinitely superior to Telegram in terms of security
Shilling yet another turbonormie app store messenger is more evidence that privacy focused products spread only through virtue signaling, not substance.
reply
Claiming these products lack substance is laughable when you consider the real-world consequences of using platforms that donโ€™t prioritize privacy: your data is the product, your freedom the costโ€‹โ€‹.
reply
They do lack substance, what's laughable is how gullible people are for anything that suggests privacy is its primary differentiator.
But I guess some paid bloggers and spooks shilling Intel honeypots could have saved those middle east pager guys, they should have just downloaded signal ๐Ÿ™„
reply
I can't get past your tragic laissez-faire nihilism.
reply
Because you're projecting it, nothing nihilistic about laughing off privacy larp

Tox is a genuine decentralised alternative.
Its just not 'cool' like Telegram (was) or SimpleX (is)- ie spruiked by touts as much! most People are sheeple.
reply
Alternative in what sense?
I use Telegram because its simply the most performant and reliable option with a reasonable network effect. I even use it in a team setting because its so much better than slack. I don't expect any privacy.
Tox won't have that. It may be more private than Signal, but thats not saying much. It uses DHT so it's completely unscalable, and is subject to metadata leakage just like Signal and Nostr... at least Nostr has some network effect.
reply
If you want network effect facebook messenger and skype might be the best for you. But if you want privacy- which is what Telegram was touted as providing, Tox can provide genuine privacy and freedom from centralised state surveillance vulnerability.
reply
Telegram doesn't position itself as a privacy product.
You also can't substantiate why tox is good on privacy vs anything else, it's another virtue signal.
reply
My impression was that Telegram did position itself very much in that way and that many (Bitcoiners esp) used it upon that misapprehension.
Consult this comparison and see how and why Tox is superior for privacy on all parameters.
reply
Proves my point further, it's all bullshit and so is everyone recommending something
You can't even defend tox, very lazy to give me a Wikipedia link... But I expect it because all privacy products are BS. Recommending something niche you don't understand is just another virtue signal recommendation.
reply
Toxes truly decentralised nature is the key. No other chat service matches it on all the parameters provided in the wikipedia comparitive analysis. I gave you the link to the wikipedia comparison as you clearly are resistant/cynical about what I and others are saying so if you want you can consult that more neutral third party for their independent assessment which clearly shows Tox is superior for privacy. If you primarily want privacy Tox is the way to go.
From whatever point of view you see it!! it is necessary to stop using Telegram... I want to confess that all my life I only used the application that the majority uses to communicate, which is WhatsApp... and in addition to that I had a profile on Instagram and I used it mostly as a way to get some good information that I could get from the few that followed there... for some time now I have been receiving market and economic studies and our study group was on Telegram... our teacher always told us from the beginning I need to get a more secure way to communicate!! this Telegram thing is totally vulnerable... and that is how we currently use 2 different applications, the 1st called Briar for our messages and the 2nd is Simplex... there we have our new study group!! I think it is wonderful to now have true security in our data and content! and also free ourselves from Garbage applications like Telegram and many more!! that all they do is indoctrinate the masses.. and promote consumerism 1000%!! and destroys the minds of young people with rubbish until they reach the point of losing their own identity... and denying themselves by isolating themselves from their families and the world!! something that seems very sad to me!!
reply
I think it's great that you're learning and dedicating time to studying, I must admit that I feel the same as you! For a long time I only used platforms like WhatsApp or Facebook, I even used Instagram for a long time. Today I'm cancelling all those services and focusing my attention on projects like Nostr, SimpleX, Tutamail, among others that are more focused on not collecting data and with better development towards the privacy of their users.
reply
Tox is the most secure and most decentralised tho not as fashionable as SimpleX and Nostr.
reply
Since I trained my pigeon I donโ€™t worry about security or my data to get stolen by greedy corporations, 90% of internet users give they data anyway to all kind of services, and even they put all kind of personal information publicly, now they are all privacy concern ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ ohh cmon
reply
Just make sure those rolls on the pigeon's neck are GPG encrypted.
reply
Simplex is the only good messenger app
reply
What makes Simplex better than Signal? Genuinely curious as I just want to find the most secure privacy-centric messaging app I can move to. I use Android and Windows and occasionally Mac so I want something that works on those ideally
reply
Agreed SimpleX is the only way to go.
reply
Tox is less centralised and thus more immune to censorship.
SimpleX relies upon centralised servers.
Tox does not.
reply
Anyone can run their own SimpleX server. How does Tox handle IP leakage since it is p2p?
reply
Can those who run their own SimpleX servers always be trusted? What is stopping state surveillance from operating/infiltrating one or multiple servers on SimpleX?
Tox is totally decentralised and you can use a VPN if you want to conceal IP- or select those you chat with as people you can trust.
reply
NOSTR
That is the solution. There is no other. The only thing left would be the bandwidth issue, which could be a problem for some countries. But there are solutions with relays, but there is no centralization, there is no censorship. If one relay blocks you, you have others. Who is the CEO, the community.
reply
Tox is equally, perhaps more secure, and definitely more private.
reply
So it is all about ip and mobile number. I think this is not a real problem and we have solutions for this. In times of exploding mobile devices there is a much bigger problem we have to solve.
reply
This app has always been a sham.
reply
I'm fortunate. I never used telegram.
reply
I hate telegram probably selling out info to the highest bidder
reply
Tox is the most secure decentralised alternative.
