Ultimately, I’m with you guys, although there’s definitely a little cognitive dissonance for me. I don’t have a mountain of bitcoin, and what I have isn’t anywhere accessible, but that's actually the thing that’s got me thinking about this way too much recently.
The reports coming out of people getting kidnapped and tortured are even more disturbing when you’re actually protecting your bitcoin properly. The attacker has little to gain, but they don’t know that, and I’ve got a LOT to lose in non-monetary terms. I wish there was a geographically distributed multi-sig sign I could put up next to my home monitoring one.
If multi-sig becomes common enough, then it would naturally become common knowledge to criminals that attacking someone who owns Bitcoin is not enough to steal their Bitcoin.
If people put their savings behind even 1 year timelocks, then it will also be common knowledge that even after you kidnap someone and get all their keys, you still can't steal their funds until you wait long enough. Long enough that police might get involved before the timelock releases.
