Start9 Non Bitcoin Self Hosting Suggestions?

Now that I've spent some time with the Start9 OS for one of my nodes, I would like to begin my long delayed quest to self host as much of my online life as possible. I'm looking for suggestions regarding non bitcoin applications. I have basically degoogled, and am currently using Protonmail for email and SimpleX for messaging. I would like good solutions for documents and photo files as well as other self hosted solutions. Regarding Next Cloud, I'm reluctant to use any type of cloud service, but I would appreciate opinions pro and con. I should also mention I run linux. Thanks.

why are you reluctant to use nextcloud on start9? its your own cloud 🙂

here is how i use it. i have nextcloud set up on my start9. then, on my graphene phone, get nextcloud app ( easy to find on f droid ). follow the start9 instructions to connect to your nextcloud service on your start9 via the nextcloud app on your phone. then, in the settings on the app i have it set so that photos i take get sent to my nextcloud on start9 when i plug my phone in to charge, and the photos are then deleted off my phone. i do this all with the. local access so that it hapoens quickly once my phone logs into the local network at home. works even for larger files like videos i take of family.

i also have all my music stored on my nextcloud service on start9, which i can then sync to my phone.

just a couple examples there are many ways to leverage nextcloud on start9 ( and will be many more once clearnet support is rolled out). its probably the service i use the most on start9 ( perhaps vaultwarden i use more ).

Sorry I never explained my reluctance in using nextcloud. It's not about nextcloud in particular. It's the idea of using the cloud at all. Have you heard the saying "the cloud is just someone else's computer"? That's my point. You are giving away control of your data to a third party. It seems to defeat the whole idea of self sovereign computing.

nextcloud is just the name of the app

you can (and should) run it on your own computer, not somebody elses

+1 on Nextcloud.

Think of it like Dropbox, OneDrive, etc. — but your Linux machine is the cloud instead of another company’s server.

I’m not an advanced user yet but I’ve got it installed and have started using it.

Yes, a few hours ago I discovered that "the cloud" was my hard drive. Now I'm already using it to back up files on an old laptop.

no, but youre not using nextclouds server, you are using your own. the start9 server you own

Thanks for the information. Your use sounds similar to what I did in the old days in the google ecosystem. Maybe I will go that route.

I should probably store my obsidian notes over there. Been casually using Nextcloud for a year, no real complaints.

other uses: you can backup your phone contacts on there, and the media you store can also be watched on the start9 jellyfin service, which i have a separate mini comp running ubuntu i hooked up to my tv, and serves as my house's local media streaming to watch movies, shows, listen to music.

You want to run more apps on Start9 or a separate server? I find pirating/media hosting to be very important and Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr are very important for that

I'm not sure. I'm just beginning to explore this stuff. Can you explain further. I know you can side load non Start9 apps, but you are talking about setting up a separate server? I guess those are media hosting apps?

Yes, that's my question - are you looking to self host more stuff on start9 or a new server? If a new server, are you're using an os similar to start9 which makes handling software/packages easier? If yes, you might want to look at CasaOS. If not, you can get really complicated, but running a bunch of containers is typical and pretty easy with most stuff launched simply with docker compose up -d

Also, just because you can self host, doesn't always mean that you should. A lot of providers offer a great service that have a lot of nice features because they have dedicated staff (devs and support) compared to trying to figure things out with the help of community.

Thanks for the information. I'll keep that in mind. I'll take my time learning and reading about it. I have an old NAS that I used to use, but I'm not sure if I trust it anymore.

Synching is very good!

Look at the community store, however I run it and a NOSTR node on my pie and my Bitcoin is on a full PC. Both are Start9.

synching For me synching was a much better solution than Nextcloud, it can sync fast even large files and syncing across multiple devices (i.e., laptops and phone) worked better for me
