Not sure if people have seen the huge controversy around 18-year-old Mattew Forbes playing in this tournament but boy is the NCAA possibly even more crooked than they were. For qualifying and making the tournament Forbes netted himself $100k and with NIL deals you would think that is fine right? According to the NCAA NOPE! If he accepts the money he loses his amateur status.
The NCAA has decided that if you get a Lambo and a house from a school it is okay but if you win $100k, an amount far far less, then you get the ax. Forbes can play in the tournament but in the end, he has to decline the money with the exception being the cost of room, travel, food, etc. It is so criminal to see this type of stuff by the NCAA I mean sorry this guy is great and beat the odds but now he has to make a huge life choice while also competing against the freakin pros!
They should be allowed to at least have earnings go into a trust that they can access once their collegiate career is over.

Exactly. To force them to make the decision is beyond me. Imagine he goes back and idk tears up a hamstring or something in his arm and it ends his tennis career after he made the choice to want to go to school... it is a disservice I mean sure you can make him pay for tuition if that is something they are worried about with scholarships but that's another problem on its own!

Deadspin used to have "Death to the NCAA" as one of their category tags, and I still fully support that notion.

The NCAA has really tried to "fix" what it thinks is wrong (even though it still entirely misses the point) with things like NIL but then somehow leaves this easily foreseen future issue unaddressed. It is beyond criminal.
