Economists were/are some of the most sought after breeds in the world. The reason is simple, they have the ability to predict the outcome of the any financial decision.

There are/were many famous and great economists in the world. It seems as if all matched each other in quality. But we're here at Stacker News poll, we'll find out who is the best economist of this world?

So, tell SN, Who, according to you is the best economist?

I have the same answer, so I'll give an honorable mention to Kenneth Arrow.

He used more modern mathematical notation to demonstrate several extremely important results: i.e. collective decision making cannot be done fairly and the market clearing price will always be at an optimally efficient level.

He doesn't get enough credit, imo, because his indisputable conclusions are very inconvenient for the wannabe technocrats who dominate the profession and because his mathematical approach is not appreciated by the Austrians.

reply

+1 for Ken Arrow.

reply

yes, it's true, I studied so long ago that I've already forgotten so many details. but an interesting personality in this context indeed

reply

I decided to become an economist after reading Arrow's Impossibility Theorem.

reply

How this poll doesn’t list Mises is beyond me

reply

THIS IS THE ONLY CORRECT ANSWER (dont forget Carl Menger)

reply

The one who wrote Freaknomics

reply

Do you mean Steven Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner?

reply

Levitt is the economist of that pair.

reply

Hold on. I thought you wrote that? Haha

Didn't someone ask you that on SN?

reply

Maybe I'm taking up referring to myself in the third person, a la @TheWildHustle.

reply

Bullish on 3rd people

reply

We know you are Hustle.

reply

You get a zap as well Ruby.

reply

Yes, you are right. Stephen is the journalist of New York Times. But when we search the name of the author of the book, both the names come together.

reply

Dubner also ended up hosting the Freakonomics podcast.

reply

@Undisciplined is my favourite economist. He is the only one I get to voice my disagreement with. This feature is paramount to me.

reply

Much appreciated. Who's to say that I wasn't one of the options in that poll?

reply

I always knew you were Adam Smith. For fuck sakes man, couldn't you have made the wealth of nations a bit shorter?

reply

Publishers used to pay by the word.

reply

If only we could get the same deal from SN. One sat per word.

reply

Von Mises Hayek

reply

What about Adam smith?

reply

Nothing bad to say about him. He spoke to himself and had imaginary friends, which I consider a good thing.

reply

This man is the greatest Economist of all times.

And this is the best book on Economics ever written.

reply

The greatest teacher of all times!

reply

He is GOAT.

reply

Undisputed!

reply

I don't think there is any one best, they are all coming from their own views. I think aggregating their views helps us shape a bigger picture.

If this answer does not satisfy then I pick Satoshi THE GOAT Nakamoto. referencing @siggy47 post lol.

reply

For me Milton Friedman, but I respect Adam Smith a lot too.

reply

Agree 👍

reply

Both are great.

reply

Adam Smith (invisible) hands down especially like his attitude on making the rich pay more tax than the poor. His reasoning is far more sophisticated than the neoliberal libertarian nonsense that claims Smiths work somehow justifies their crude greed is good decadence.

reply

Paul Krugman, he has a Nobel prize so that's proof

reply

Serious answer - the Austrian school guys, Hayek etc.

reply

Paul Krugman is a genius. 😄

reply

Adam smith takes it from me! It depends on the time period from my view. Smtih is as classic as it gets.

reply

I have a hard time ranking people for many reasons but one big one is if they lived in different times they likely influenced each other. They likely built on top of each other's ideas or at least in contrast.

Now I really like Mises, Rothbard, and Hoppe but wouldn't presume to say any of those are the best. They all have contributed to the knowledge we have.

Carl Menger von Mised Murray Rothbard
