This surprises me. I thought she would just dig in and continue the slaughter.

The situation in Bangladesh is frightening! Facebook, insta, WhatsApp are banned in Bangladesh. Internet and communication is down in most places.

The latest I'm hearing is that Sheikh Hasina has fled from the country.

This started as an agitation on 30% reservation given to freedom fighters' families. However it was curtailed in 2018 after violence, last month the court have reinstated the reservation.
reply
The war was in the early 70s, right? How old are these freedom fighters?
reply
This is what happens in politics. Someone else instigates the riots; the party that is working has to resign.
reply
TBH, Sheikh Hasina isn't the reason for this violence. There's been a big conspiracy going on ever since Sheikh Hasina's re-accession in 1981.
These protests are actually run by islamic extremists sponsored by Pakistan.
The sudden and a very easy surrender by Bangladeshi armed forces to a protest by students may tell you the rest.
The students have aggressed into the PM house there and breaking or stealing things from there.
Protestors breaking the statue of their foremost leader says everything.

The country is 90% Muslim? What religion is Hasina?
reply
Hasina is also a muslim but she hold the views of a secular and nationalist party.

I see

She's coming to New Delhi. Not sure she'll stay there. She is most probably heading to London.
She has fled because Bangladesh Army has denied her any support.

I heard in the Portuguese media that they have cut off telecommunications and the internet.
reply
They've cut it a while ago already.
My Bangladeshi colleague couldn't contact his family anymore. Two of his juniors at his former uni got slaughtered. He told me of videos where the army was shooting at students from helicopters.
It's fucked.
Now he could reach his siblings using some vpn commected to some banking wifi that had to be restarted as half the country depends on remittances for survival.
He believes he won't be able to return to his country with current government in place. He believes he's blacklisted as most Bangladeshi abroad as they are the ones who can post and tell about the crimes committed by their government.
I'll ask him tomorrow what her resignation means for the future of the country.
reply
I don't know the reality of Bangladesh very well, but I do know that 170 million people in such a small country can easily become a powder keg, and I hope not.
reply
Yes. I think they did that last week. Do you have any idea what's going on now? I wonder if the military turned on the ruling group?
reply
I've no idea!
reply
We should ask our friends in India

"Resigns"... That's putting it lightly. NHL commissioners resign, but this..
reply
Tell me Bettman resigned. Please
We can say that there are factors that influenced this decision to leave his position... and it is not surprising... in that country and with the number of people who live in that capital... it is not so easy to do what they do in South America and to be more specific in Venezuela! a total dictatorship where no one has the right to have an opinion other than what the government forces say... backed by the armed forces and military... they have done what they want for the last 25 years... a mass exodus of more than 8 million of people with official figures... and a generation that continues to live there indoctrinated in parasitic and begging thinking... how only socialism can create it, in my opinion one of the worst plagues of society...

Sounds very rough. Wild west stuff.

I just saw the news and I ran to SN. Damn, what great news, I was so happy to see this. The importance of the surrender of the military forces in dictatorships is key. Their happy faces in the photos say it all, it simply makes me want to cry with joy. I hope my country is experiencing that emotion soon.
