Is it true that he was piloting the plane that crashed?
Yes. He was a good pilot, but had only been flying for a year. I remember everyone saying he had bought himself an overly sophisticated jet.

So, he had his jet! People believe that he was the best catcher but he's still not inducted to hall of fame. This also surprised me.

It was not a long time. His instructor said he was an above average pilot, but he made a dumb mistake. He didn't put his flaps down while landing. His instructor and a friend were in the plane. They both survived.
