Don't know much about him. Familiar with the name and knew he had died in a plane crash.

reply

Lots of snide jokes from Red Sox fans after the crash

reply

Is it true that he was piloting the plane that crashed?

reply

Yes. He was a good pilot, but had only been flying for a year. I remember everyone saying he had bought himself an overly sophisticated jet.

reply

So, he had his jet! People believe that he was the best catcher but he's still not inducted to hall of fame. This also surprised me.

reply

One year is not a long time

I bet teams don't allow this anymore

reply

It was not a long time. His instructor said he was an above average pilot, but he made a dumb mistake. He didn't put his flaps down while landing. His instructor and a friend were in the plane. They both survived.

reply

That's pretty low.

reply

Boston fans, especially Red Sox fans in a nutshell

reply

It's so that he died so early!

reply

he was even tougher than he looks. he was a boulder on a run stopping play.

reply

He was tough. He also had a canon on throws to 2nd

reply

I'm old enough to remember Munson and Catfish Hunter!!!

reply

How about Horace Clark?

reply

Yup, USVI native. Wasn't a Yanks fan but loved great baseball. I followed the Reds and Dodgers back then.

reply

I knew there had to be a few of us out there!

reply

Yeah, I remember this. One of my first concrete memories of sports as a kid. (I also remember being a big fan of Rick Cerone, who replaced him the next season).

reply

I liked Cerone too.

Munson's final locker position was never reassigned. The locker next to Yankee team captain Derek Jeter's, with Munson's number 15 on it, remained unused as a tribute to the Yankees' lost catcher in the original Yankee Stadium until the Stadium closed in 2008.

I didn't know this

reply

They all loved him so much!
