They have a waitlist to access the wallet? Makes me think it’s going to be backed by some centralized server API.
Probably oriented towards new bitcoiners.
I haven't read the post yet, but from another comment here on the thread, it sounds like there's some handling of sending btc to an email address that's probably hosted by proton, so I think that's where the centralized server would come into play? I could definitely be wrong though, and should probably read the article.

Hopefully, the wallet can function without these features enabled.
Sending to email sounds like a great feature! As much as I hate email and love NOSTR, reality is email is still the prominent way to get in touch with people.
They can probably support all email address, but require users to create a Free proton account to claim their bitcoin.

Yes it says both users must have Proton Wallet (not a paid plan though) to use the email feature. It also says they pre-generate a list of receive addresses, signed by a gpg key and uploaded to the server.
