Yeah, just keep auto updates off. I've heard directly from a self-custody crypto mobile wallet provider that even though it's self custody, they could push an auto update to sign transactions... Can't mention them by name, but there's really nothing unique about them. Third party trust is third party trust.
In the meantime, if the result of a device hack is a compromised keystore, there goes your e2ee.
people accepting payments or donations in Bitcoin may just generate one address and tell everyone to send BTC to it. However, this isn’t great for privacy because anyone can see how many BTC were received at that address, where they came from, and where they were later sent to.
The unique feature built into Proton Wallet is sending Bitcoin to an email address in a low-friction, private way without reusing Bitcoin addresses.
I consider it to be another tool, but I would not use it to store my savings in it. and I think that this type of simple usability is to attract a new audience, which could impact the price upwards in the medium term 📈
I haven't read the post yet, but from another comment here on the thread, it sounds like there's some handling of sending btc to an email address that's probably hosted by proton, so I think that's where the centralized server would come into play? I could definitely be wrong though, and should probably read the article.
Hopefully, the wallet can function without these features enabled.
Sending to email sounds like a great feature! As much as I hate email and love NOSTR, reality is email is still the prominent way to get in touch with people.
They can probably support all email address, but require users to create a Free proton account to claim their bitcoin.
Yes it says both users must have Proton Wallet (not a paid plan though) to use the email feature. It also says they pre-generate a list of receive addresses, signed by a gpg key and uploaded to the server.
not really selling the invite... the fact is that sending DM here on SN cost at least 1 sat. But you're right, I should have used first-arrive-first served approach!
bitcoin-to-email is cool and all, but this is just another proprietary implementation, right? Sender has to have Proton. So it's just like sending Cashapp->Cashapp or Strike->Strike...
Who asked for this? Seriously. I mean, its better than leaving your coins on an exchange, but still, who asked for this? Out of all features they could work on... why this? And this is coming from a Proton premium user.
The story as I understand it, is it is a safety net for them and their users if they are demonetized by stripe, PayPal, etc…. They are introducing it now to protect their future…. And make it super easy for new users who aren’t in the space yet.
Just saying, it’s very rare for a company to have robust security AND be constantly pushing out new products and features.
Case in point, didn’t proton get hacked a little while back?
Just use cold wallets, people.
Even if it's hacked, your data is e2e encrypted.
Hot wallet is perfectly fine for some use cases.

Depending on how they designed the client keystore access, it might be possible, but that would be an obvious design flaw.
there goes your digital life essentially
But not your bitcoin!
Might be an interesting way to send bitcoin through email. I'll try it out when LN is ready
Seems Like another Trust or metamask in the making!
Correct!!
Proton Wallet on X: "@Stromens We're not interested in shitcoins." / X
Proton confirmed maxi.
Is ETH a shitcoin to them?
If you're asking me... Yes.
I believe so, and agree
Big move by proton
Proton Coinjoin?
The ref to whirlpool and other TBDs were removed from the README.
of course they would be ;)
I wondered what kind of guy is Andy Yen? Came from CERN originally.
wasn't there a BIP recently that was accepted that enabled DNS Name -> BTC Address?
It seems like if wallets adopted that it would massively improve the security footprint....
BIP 353: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/9cfe3a4a9021d893859af4517ab6cb6f5d6c387e/bip-0353.mediawiki
Privacy by email, I prefer a cold wallet or other blockchain.
"Bitcoin via Email" is interesting
Woah
I have always used Proton and its applications. I hope your wallet is of equal quality.
Interesting... lots of new stuff in the Bitcoin World today. I have to find time to experiment all of them. Nevertheless, keep them coming.
Proton products are always of excellent quality in my subjective opinion

They have a waitlist to access the wallet? Makes me think it’s going to be backed by some centralized server API.
Probably oriented towards new bitcoiners.

[OFFER] Proton Wallet - 3 invites left in the ~AGORA marketplace
#656656
Don't sell invites, if anyone needs one I think I have 4 left, you can DM me on Nostr

This is a good PR for bitcoin intself. More people would know about bitcoin closer we are to bitcoin economy.

I like it, I do wish they pushed out a Linux client for Proton Drive first, but it's nice to have either way.
Is this connected to Proton mail inn any way? Interesting, being able to use email for this. How do you get the lifetime membership?
It works between proton accounts I believe, you purchase the lifetime membership and it's pretty pricey.
How much? Anyone know? I just found out...at least 14k and increasing!
Lightning?
As a primary proton email user, I endorse this message. 🫡
Does their website mention it was founded by CERN? 🤔
By ex-CERN scientists I believe, not CERN the entity itself
Was it?
Need to learn

What is Proton Wallet?
Ohh sounds good.
Yes it is
