a) because it is fun to respond nice try fed
b) it's silly to post asking people about their net worth so a silly response is reasonable.
I don't want to slag @BitcoinAbhi. He has some great posts and comments but this one missed the mark.
But it's a very common thing here in India. Everyone who works, I've seen many times that people ask a lot 'How much is your salary or how much do you earn?' I think it's that he just didn't understand the cultural differences!
reply
You just answered your own question I think.
Cultural differences. In US culture how much money one makes or wealth isn't talked about openly. I mean, that might not make sense to outsiders because Americans do plenty of showing off their wealth or trying to look wealthy but asking someone how much they make or what their net worth is a big insult to most people.
I wonder if the difference is due to the more clear class / caste system in India? I don't know a lot about it so I might be out of line or way off here. Just wondering.
I had a good friend in middle school who is Punjab. His parents are from India. I have many neighbors who are ethnic Punjab. I've worked with many Indians over the years in tech but, I still pretty ignorant of Indian culture and history. If I'm off on my characterization let me know.

No, not because of it. Instead, I think it's because people are too happy or fascinated when someone is working and getting paid. People here are more outright in speaking behaviour. They will ask you straight for the things which are considered unmannered otherwise, like your salary, your age, married or not, diet or disease or anything.

That's interesting. So you are saying people are more direct. Thanks for sharing.
I was speaking broadly about the US of course. Its a massive country with many different regions that have very different cultures. I've lived a few places in my life and differences are pretty drastic culturally. Its one of the root issues we see come out in politics. A lot of the things people think are the fault of Trump or Biden are cultural differences at the root.

Yes, you're right. I agree! Thanks!

India standard of living decreased after independence.
They would be better off today as a British colony like Hong Kong before 1997
reply
Completely wrong! British rule took away India's wealth and now India is going to be once again the best of the best.
reply
That's not a very strong argument based on the limited info you are providing here.
I'm far from an expert on Indian history but my understanding is that the British like most empires made arbitrary unions across ethic groups pushing groups into one system. Then when they left India things really fell apart. There was a civil war which led to the formation of Pakistan.
I'm not saying you are right or wrong. I can see there might be positives of the British occupation but also I have serious issues with colonization and arbitrary centralized decisions being forced on millions of people who never gave their consent.
Do you think the US would have been better off if it had remained a collection of British colonies? Seems like a hard argument to prove either way.
reply
Probably not
But look at how other colonies have flourished like Canada and Australia and New Zealand, Hong Kong , Singapore
The British did a good job with most colonies in setting them up for autonomy and success.
Regarding USA, if we remained a colony with representation and autonomy, maybe USA would have been better off.
Tough to say because USA became economic superpower after the civil war. By 1898 USA had surpassed Great Britain has the largest economy in the world

Could be. Not something people discuss or disclose in the west and anyone who does respond is likely lying anyways.
reply
Yes, TBH I also lied there.
reply
I always lie. I usually say I am poor

I also knew that people would not respond to this. This post was posted just for fun. Maybe I selected the territory wrong. should have been put in lol.
