Hey Everyone- I was curious about what you have witnessed at your local Bitcoin meetup, or at a Bitcoin conference that you found to be super cringe.
For the Bitcoin meetups I have been to I have never witnessed anything too cringe. I guess there is always some social awkwardness. I have only been to about half a dozen, and all have been very well organized here in Arizona.
For the conferences several things I have found to be cringe (I've primarily gone to the main ones- which will change this next year). First, the booths the event coordinators decide to allow are super cringe. From Lexis Nexis, to some scam internet websites, to Pepe NFTs there is no end to the number of things on the floor that can make one roll their eyes.
Next is the people. Often you will see people dressed in Gucci, Louis, or wearing ordinal hats. It looks slimy, fake, and materialistic. Not everyone is like this, but near the main stage, I have seen this several times.
The last thing I find cringe is certain speakers. I remember one year I think Serena Williams was talking about Bitcoin and I (and just about everyone) could tell she didn't have a clue what she was talking about - rather I'm sure she was just cut a large check. I think it is better if these people aren't even on, rather than speaking and looking like a fool to themselves and making it cringe for everyone else. Some of the ordinal speakers are annoying too - but in the end, I just choose to avoid those.
As I get older and my stack increases, I try to be subtle and not wear Bitcoin logos around. It just makes me a target. I prefer subtleness - but these events are filled with logos on everyone's shirts which I am starting to find cringe.
