Hello I want to share with you all my random discovery of the day. I don't post much, I'm more in the comments, but I am so happy with these open source apps for my phone that it made me post it or maybe it is because I am under the effects of coffee and I never drink coffee LOL so forgive me haha.
The apps are in development, relatively new, so I think it is worth to share them anyway. The developers ask for a one time fee payment to have a license forever but they also say nobody is going to stop you from using the apps without payment. I think it is always cool to support open source development. Nothing new.
These are a couple of must have apps if you are wanting to degoogle yourself. Instead of just providing you the links to these apps, I'm going to try and also do some proof of work describing the apps for you and telling me personal opinion.

Grayjay

Replace Youtube and other video platforms with this app.

This is how Stacker News channel looks like on my phone:
Grayjay is a video player and source aggregator. You can install plugins to read the videos from different sources, like Youtube, Odysee, etc. One app to watch them all.
  • You can then choose to see the list of all new videos from all sources in one page, or easily filter by source, or by type, (videos, posts, live streams)
  • All subscriptions and settings are stored locally on your phone. Make sure you enable the auto backup all your settings too. If you like NewPipe, I think you will love it too. The player is very similar, you can watch on a popup window over all other apps, or in the background, and the best thing for me is that it has support for sending to the TV via Chromecast or Fcast. Very cool.
  • You can make groups of subscriptions, for example all channels you like about Bitcoin, in one group, then browse all those bitcoin channels new videos like a personal RSS feed. Very Cool.
  • You can make private offline playlists that are saved only on your phone, and you can easily download the videos so you can watch them later offline.
my personal opinion is that this app is better already than NewPipe and works really well so far. I think it is really worth to try it. Hopefully all content creators move from Youtube to other platforms like Odysee, but let's be real, it is difficult to happen, and this way we can have all the content creators from each platform in one app and the offline settings without sending your data to the cloud is great. Maybe one day NewPipe adds chromecast support? Maybe, but until then, this is my new app for watching videos on the phone or TV.
If some of you may be still using iOS devices, let me paste the info from the FAQ here Do you have a iOS version? Not in the near future, our focus right now is a first class Android application.

Futo Keyboard

Replace your Android Goggle Keyboard with this one.

This keyboard is so far the best alternative I've found to the google keyboard. I've been working with florisboard keyboard but it has been slow in development for quite a while now. Keep in my that it is in ALPHA version right now. But so far it is working well. It has a good looking interface, and setup welcome screen, making it very easy to setup.
  • It works offline, without sending the data you type to Google. It also comes with voice input using AI whisper models to for voice recognition and works really well. All offline. I don't know about you, but this is a must have for me at least because the keyboard is something you constantly use on a phone.
I like the design, it has several themes too. It has all the important functions you expect from a keyboard, coming from the goggle keyboard app. The only thing I miss for now, or I don't know how to configure is language autodetection for the auto correction and text prediction, the language at least can be switched with the space bar but auto detection would be nice. I guess they are working on it.

How to install

You can install them directly downloading the APK files from their websites mentioned or, more recommended to have update notifications, using F-Droid, adding a custom repository from here: https://app.futo.org/fdroid/repo/ or Using Obtainium

about Futo

FUTO is an organization dedicated to developing, both through in-house engineering and investment, technologies that frustrate centralization and industry consolidation.
to finish the post I thought it is interesting to mention the main Futo page with much more information https://futo.org and more great apps!!! But I just wanted to mention these two, that I tested today.
worth to read the What is Futo page and what problem they are solving: https://futo.org/about/what-is-futo/
Happy stacking! Quark
its a wonderful app part of its features is that it enables you to create and watch video content in your own terms, fully retaining ownership and having control over what you watch. Your content on your terms. but i could not find the app on my i.o.s
reply
Yeah, that is right.
It is only for Android devices.

Great to have recommendations like this. Bookmarked, thanks. 🙏

Grayjay’s a great idea.
I’m trying to think through whether it will reduce YouTube content or not. What do you think?
reply
I think it will reduce the time attention from youtube and distribute it to others platforms and facilitating OPTing out to the platform that are better serving privacy Do you guys have an idea how it works? Like kind of fediverse server? The monetization is an from of shitcoin? I would like to know.
reply
I don't know anything beyond what was in this post.
reply
I don't understand why would reduce it. I guess content creators can be uploading the same content to youtube and other platforms at the same time. So the viewers choose the platform they like the most. Although Youtube free version is recently being unwatchable with so many ads.. That will make more people look for alternatives.
reply
That's sort of what I was thinking.
This helps solve the network effect issue that alternative platforms face. By adopting Grayjay, users aren't choosing between all the content on YouTube and some other platform with very little content. They're choosing the platform that has the most choices.
If your audience is using Grayjay, then you can post to what ever platform you like the most.

Good recommendations! Thank you

Loving the keyboard, thanks for the recommendation. Better than OpenBoard which I've been using on GrapheneOS for quite a while. It is easy to type on, and fast, too! The one thing I'd love to see is a clipboard history, other than that, it's great!
Been using Grayjay for yonks, love that!

go to settings, typing preferences, you can enable clipboard history there. It is disabled by default.

Amazing, thank you! Now it is truly the perfect keyboard!

Thanks for the information. I have a graphene pixel and I really haven't found a good keyboard yet. I'm going to try Futo. Grayjay sounds like it's worth trying too. I use libre tube, but this sounds like it has more options.
reply
Libretube is also great and true open source by definition. There is an issue for some people with grayjay license not being Libre, free open source. But it is very similar to open source, without commercial modifications. I have added a comment in the post explaining more about it.

It's good to see these alternatives rolling out! Although I want some app that stands will stand face to face with YouTube. May be an app that lets the users upload fresh content and rewards much the same as SN does..

I agree, this feels like the future. I think the days of platforming users are done. It feels like were moving into community offerings instead. Specifically what offerings does your community provide that others don't. I could be wrong but the days of big tech grabbing everyone are going away.

This is excellent👍... I am new to this in the crypto world and I am learning and looking for complete information as it is.. Thank you😊

EDIT: I forgot to write a bit more about the license issue

Video

this video from Louis Rossmann is worth to watch to know more about the author and the Grayjay project and the license.
the video was banned from youtube, so here it is: https://odysee.com/@rossmanngroup:a/the-best-way-to-watch-online-video-my:c

The License

The license is not Free and Open Source Software(FOSS) as we are used to. It is a custom view of open source. You can modify the code for your own personal use, but not redistribute it for commercial purposes. You cannot modify the part of the code that deals with the payments to Futo.
I think they are monetizing the software by selling the licenses while providing the full code to show that there is nothing bad in the app and they fear that with an FOSS license, someone would fork it and remove the payment and insert malware into it as it happened with NewPipe.
Video: more explanations about the license: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCjy2CHP7zU
the important part of the license:

Copyright License

FUTO Holdings, Inc. (the “Licensor”) grants you a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, non-sublicensable, non-transferable license to use, copy, distribute, make available, and prepare derivative works of the software, in each case subject to the limitations below.

Limitations

You may** use or modify the software only for non-commercial purposes** such as personal use for research, experiment, and testing for the benefit of public knowledge, personal study, private entertainment, hobby projects, amateur pursuits, or religious observance, all without any anticipated commercial application. You may distribute the software or provide it to others only if you do so free of charge for non-commercial purposes. Notwithstanding the above, you may not remove or obscure any functionality in the software related to payment to the Licensor in any copy you distribute to others. You may not alter, remove, or obscure any licensing, copyright, or other notices of the Licensor in the software. Any use of the Licensor’s trademarks is subject to applicable law.
