i had a LN wallet. the gubment scared my providers out of operation.
i'm gonna travel to El Salvador later this year. i'd like to spend some sats while i'm there. i don't want to use CashApp.
how can i get a KYC free LN provider from the US today? i have a VPN.
gosh... i feel dumb asking these questions.

Just a note: their fedimint (freedom one) has problem paying lightning invoices in the moment. Maybe for some reason there is no longer suitable lightning gateway...

doesn't mutiny require you run your own node?
reply
Mutiny is a node, but you can run it in two ways:
  • using their default server / domain (mutinywallet.com)
  • run your own server on your own domain
reply
No, they have an LSP by default. You can be ready to receive onchain or lightning in less than 1 minute. Very easy.
You can choice the more advance route of connecting to your lighting node as an option

reply
What's your pitch? What's it got that others don't?
reply
It connects to your own node remotely over Nostr, so it's fast and reliable and you don't need to do any complicated networking...
The Nostr based account system Lightning.Pub lets you share your node with friends/family as guests
Don't have a home node? No problem, it has automation to spin up a cloud node once it's cost effective, you'll be able to share that with others over Nostr as well
It also supports multiple accounts, including Legacy LNURL ones, so you can manage and automate your Lightning balances from LNURL-friendly services
It also uses Nostr to sync your wallet state, so you can use the same wallet on your Desktop, Phone, Tablet etc...

For a spending wallet in El Salvador, I think Blink is good. Even that you have a limit for non-KYC, you can still fund it from any other wallet and use it as a daily spending wallet, especially in El Salvador where the internet infrastructure is not very good and you depend a lot of mobile connections.

How about betatesting our new wallet? Self-custodial, sovereign node in the cloud, linked with apps, mobile, browser.
We're launching it this summer, you can get early access by joining one of the onboarding sessions:

I'm a fan and user of Alby. What will the cost/fees be for the self-custodial product?

We're still figuring that out. Would you like to try it and tell us what would you pay?
App is/will be open-source, but we could run it for you for small... membership? Transactions? What would you prefer?
+costs for opening channels, naturally

I think for most Bitcoin services 1% is the sweet spot. It seems substantial enough from a business perspective, without being offensive to the customer (like credit cards or Coinbase).
Competition could drive that down eventually, but superior reliability, functionality, and service could allow a business to maintain a premium. I think most users trivialize the difference between .1% and 1% anyway -- I know I do.
I'm not a huge fan of subscriptions. I probably would for Alby, but generally I find memberships to just feel like a financial burden, in a psychological sense. Like, I can afford another $5/month service, but I already have so many, it makes me feel like a slave. In some ways it feels worse than debt, because it's in perpetuity and doesn't diminish. I recognize that it is more stable income for the business.

obligatory fix

ok ok will add it 😂😂 You need to write more about it, so more people will know about how this wallet works and which are the requirements. Not many people will understand how it works at first sight. But you are right, Shock wallet should be on that ladder.
reply
Pub release rabbit hole always goes deeper than expected, getting there though.. soon â„¢
reply
True, I didn't know about this wallet, just recently I started using Zeus Wallet because Darthcoin recommended it and it's at the top of that ladder, and now Shock Wallet appears that I haven't heard anything about it...
reply
I do not "recommend" any wallet in particular. Why? Because I always say:
  • use not just one wallet app but at least 2-3. Reliability is important.
  • each wallet app have its specific features that could help you in your unique use cases
  • that ladder shows how a newbie baby in bitcoin start learning. If you try to skip steps, depending on you knowledge lebel, you could break a leg. Jumping straight to top is not recommended for total noobs. You must learn to "walk"... and climb that ladder.
  • the position of each wallet app in that ladder is according to their specific features and functions, level of complexity, and also the user knowledge level.

Excellent thank you Darth

I use Zeus (https://zeusln.com/) You can connect it to pretty much to anywhere (use your own node is the best way). YMMV.
reply
a easy to use "CUSTODIAL" wallet is Coinos.io
If you want to go for a non custodial wallet, maybe download Phoenix when you get to El Salvador...
reply
Zeus is pretty good. Works very similarly to phoenix. Just try to open a nice size channel to start (1mm+ sats).
reply
I suggest Phoenix or Zeus.
reply
I thought Phoenix was pulling out of the US.
reply
Maybe. I don't have that issue in Canada so I am not up to date on all the issues of wallet providers.
reply
It wasn't clear to me.
They were withdrawing from the app stores and signaled to their customers that they were suspending service, but people were also saying it would still work as long as you downloaded Phoenix somewhere other than an app store.
reply
Still works for me, I used it a couple days ago but then again it might not be the case in US.
WoS also works for me.
reply
I had only recently downloaded it when they made their announcement, so I just never transferred anything to it. It's easy enough to use other wallets.
reply
Are you willing to go non-custodial?
reply
Yes. Absolutely.
reply
You can use mutiny wallet.
reply
One way you can mitigate this is to withdraw to a lightning wallet, as it can be more private, note NOT TOTALLY private
reply
If you have an android electrum would be my choice.
reply
ZBD doesn't do KYC - I think there are limits on how much you can send though.
reply
Wrong. Is much more KYC than you think: is connected straight to your google account and IMEI, through google services REQUIRED to bd able to install it.

custodial - minibits
non-custodial - mutiny or zeus
