Two coincidental (?) and yet similar events.
The first event A few months ago, I broke my arm and was operated on at the National Trauma Hospital. A few months have passed, the arm has healed and everything is fine.
However, two days ago, I received a call from the hospital telling me that they were conducting a survey to see how satisfied patients were with the hospital's services and conditions.
After some general questions and before they asked me about the surgery, recovery, etc., she asked me this question: What is your monthly income?
I was like, what the hell! What kind of question is that? Of course, I didn't answer that question. When I asked the woman, "How is my monthly income related to my broken arm and the surgery," she said, - guess what, guys! - I don't know. They (government authorities or some other private entity, who knows!) told me to ask this question, and I'm doing it.
The second event One day after the above phone call, I was working in my favorite bar-cafe near my house. A girl approached me (she did the same with all the people in that bar) with a form in her hand.
She worked for a transportation company. The company was doing a study or research on the means of transportation that people used to get around the city and had broken it down by area. The girl in question was interested in the street where I lived.
After a few questions like how I get there (by bus, taxi, on foot, etc.) and how often I go there, she started asking questions like how much I spent that day in the bar and how much I spend every day in all the shops on that street.
I did not see any connection between the company's research on transportation and how much I spend in the stores in my neighborhood.
So on two consecutive days, two different companies are interested in how much I earn and how much I spend. It was very strange.
Why do they want to know how much I earn and how much I spend?
How would you answer these questions?
And do you think these questions are okay?
Some of these could be census-related questions. I know often they need to ask people in the neighborhood how much they make, to get a better picture of the market conditions.
I personally wouldn't answer them - you just need to be discreet. I know Census people if they don't get an answer, they will try again the next day as they have quotas to meet.

Your net worth determines a lot of your lifestyle and personal choices.
According to your income and net worth your priorities in life change. It makes sense to gather this very important information, specially if you provide services. However, it's not something you wanna broadcast, specially with the number of scammers increasing worldwide.
I wouldn't recomend you to lie, just left it blank or refuse to answer
