It's interesting that we talk about each of these countries as being economic basket cases, but then it's supposed to be really concerning that they're teaming up.
BRICS is a really interesting challenge to dollar hegemony, but as an economic union it's nonsense on stilts.

I agree about the significant change part, but if they're lousy at managing their own economies, why would they succeed at cooperating with others?

That is the thing that would make me spectacularly wrong, but for the time being we still have the freer economies and we've been seeing in China how hard it is for the rulers to give up control to markets.
OPEC didn't overtake the west and I doubt the situation will be different with BRICS. I'm always bearish on centralized government projects and so far that's served me pretty well.
