pull down to refresh

Hey All - Maybe this only applies to us, but my fiancé and I both drive pretty cheap cars day in and out to save money and stack more sats. We both paid cash on the barrel head for these cars and outside of the typical maintenance ($1.5K/year), things are going well.

We drive a 12+ year old Chrysler 200 with over 175K miles on it, and a 10+ year old Accord with over 122K miles on it. Both cars combined are probably worth no more than $10,000 per Kelly Blue Book.

The way I see it is we can both hit our stacking goals, drive reliable transportation and not be debt slaves like the majority of the population. It is a freeing feeling every morning to wake up knowing you don't owe anybody anything for these cars. It would be nice to have a nice truck or car, but we can both see that lobster trap too clearly.

What car do you drive (or have you driven), that has helped you stack more sats?

Chrysler 200 with over 175K miles on it

I'm surprised a Chrysler lasted that long. I assumed they wouldn't.

I used to drive a 1984 Jetta that I bought off a friend for $800. Then a few years later I bought a used Toyota Van that prior to a small collision was as a rental car.

reply

OP described it as reliable. I choked on my beverage lol

reply

I believe him but I am shocked

reply

You have to remember, not all cars are made on fridays! Lol

reply

Was your toyota a manual transmission?
There are previas here that are manual, but you have to look hard.
I was thinking of getting one.
Toyotas last forever!

reply

They only sell them as automatics here. Manual would be cool. The Jetta was my 2nd manual car. Much more fun.

reply

More fun and more control.
Especially in the snow.

reply

I can’t believe a Chrysler with 175k

When I took an auto-repair class, I recall the instructor saying Jeep/Chrysler mostly made cars from leftover, surplus parts from other manufacturers, which is why they were so unreliable.

reply

Jeep isnt very reliable but they always come out with new bodies that are trendy.

reply

To be honest it probably has one more year left in it. Hoping to make it to 200K but don't know if that will happen lol.

reply

Okay, thays not a bad idea! But what about maintenance? Do old cars not require high maintenance cost?

I love cards but new and cheap. Here in India we can buy a good new car in 5k to 10ks. So, I bought one 2 years ago all in cash ... And there's little to no maintaining costs for at least 10 years I suppose.

reply

They claim it's only "$1.5K/year" which is pretty excellent

reply

That's what I'm saying. Here we can buy a midsize new car in 5k and the maintenance would be like 50 to 100 dollars for every 15000 kms ride.

So, a new car is better option here. I don't know too much about US.

reply

The problem is the insurance is never cheap.
Even on old cars.

reply

On our side rental cars only, mostly honda. We squeeze money everywhere: rent (proudly less than 400 USD / month), food, entertainment. And I stack sats.
Thanks to that, last year was quite a productive year to stack more. This year feels dry because of the price.

reply

Have you heard of up shift?

reply

Do my feet count? Cheaper than any car I've ever seen, even with good sneakers.

reply

Thats when you need to invest in a good pair of boots.
I have a pair of iron rangers!
They have lasted me 7 years now.
Soon will need a resole.

reply

I drive a cheap car!
I have a 1992 mazda protege!

reply

Did you inherit it or buy it used?

The car is older than you lol

reply

I bought it when l was young.
I bought it used.

reply

A lot of SN users were born after 1992 lol

reply

Oh really?
I am part of the older generation?

reply

Generation X and older is the older generation

reply

When is gen x?

We don't drive cars, but scooters, or walk.

From 2014 to 2018 I was driving a Toyota Starlet 1998, very reliable car and cheap to use and maintain. During that period I working abroad and the main goal was stacking SATs.

Now days, back to my country I drive a Smart ForFour 2015, very low gas / petrol consumption and super easy to park in a busy city.

reply

I bought a car for around $120, I drove it for a year and then I sold it for $300...

reply

I totaled my car and was forced into another car payment wish I didn’t need the car. So I could of just stacked more instead of making car payments
