Research suggests that psychedelic drugs can reopen critical periods of brain development to create opportunities for re-learning and psychological healing. In this episode, co-host Janna Levin speaks with Gül Dölen, a neuroscientist studying the therapeutic potential of psychedelic substances.
During traumatic periods and their aftermath, our brains can fall into habitual ways of thinking that may be helpful in the short run but become maladaptive years later. For the brain to readjust to new situations later in life, it needs to be restored to the malleable state it was in when the habits first formed. That is exactly what Gül Dölen, a neuroscientist and psychiatric researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, is working toward in her lab. What is her surprising tool? Psychedelics.
It can, but like anything, it needs to be used correctly and accompanied by a trained clinical professional.

If you are new. I agree. If you have control of yourself and your mind and along with some experience…you can navigate just fine.

Very true.

It seems like a very promising area. It'll be hard to keep Big Pharma from squashing it, though.
reply
Psychedelics have long been used to treat certain illnesses, and big pharma will certainly try to push this further.
reply
That's true, but only through approved patented products. The idea that people could use inexpensive natural products is a nonstarter for them.

if people use natural stuff, then big pharma can't make money
reply
Ah ok, I didn't understand that :)

Already underway. Big FDA smackdown a few weeks ago. Much like btc, it'll get there, the question is how long it will take.
reply
That's right. Short term bearish, long term bullish.
reply
Big pharma is already salivating at the idea.
They don't squash it, they love it. Besides, they don't have that much power in Washington anyway.
Big pharma loves it because actual mushrooms won't be how shrooms will get legal and mainstream. It will get legal and mainstream in pills and capsules because there it is easier to quantify the amount taken and control the supply chain against contamination
reply
Big pharma has little power in DC?
What makes you say this besides a momentary loss of reason?
reply
Peoples imagination of pharma companies is very far from what you people are imagining.
You want to know what real power in washington is? Getting money straight fom your paycheck into military industrial complex and shipping it around the globe. That's power.
Compared to that: pharma can't even steal everyones money for a universal healthinsurance. Look at the percentage of government budget and into which industries they flow. Pharma is weak and pathetic in Washington.
Look at the cold hard facts instead of your brainworms.
reply
Nobody said it was the most powerful lobby. Maybe we're just quibbling over what "they don't have that much power" means, but they get lots of favorable treatment from the government that screws the rest of us over.
We did just go through an insane episode of medical tyranny where kids were being mandated to take experimental medical treatments for diseases they were at no risk from. Who do you think that was for? Hint: it was the companies that made billions of dollars selling those products.

We did just go through an episode where this medicine WAS NOT mandated. They couldn't even get that through under the best conditions possible.
That's exactly what I mean by weak and pathetic: there is no more tailwind for them possible than that. That's so far away from e.g. Turbotax or Tesla getting their asses straight up licked by government.
That's exactly what I mean by "brainworms". You seem to live in a parallel world from reality where big pharma lobby got things through that they didn't get through in reality. We're so far away from government stealing your money and paying Insulin or Ozempic with it - which is the situation in many other industries
reply
It's semantics. They add the covid "vaccines" to the vaccine schedule and then government schools automatically require them. Yes, there are stronger mandates than that, but that is still a mandate.
Kids are required to go to school by the government and we are all required to fund them and they put these mandates in place for attendance.
Not to mention, parents were relentlessly propagandized to inject their kids with these products. Again, who was that done for?
This is such a bizarre hill to want to die on after the past four years.
reply
That's all part of what I mean by squashing it.
they don't have that much power in Washington anyway

I personally took 3.5 grams of Golden Teacher mushrooms yesterday.
I haven’t felt this clear, or level-headed in six years.
Which just so happens to be six months after my last dose.
reply
some claim, but given my experience, they can sure make it worse, and cause problems

we can't generalize for everyone or abuse it

I have seen this too, more than once.

Anyone have personal experience with stuff like this?

If you mean "experienced" in the Jimi Hendrix sense, yeah. I was a teenager in the 70s, and I'm sure there are plenty of younger stackers with even more knowledge. I have both positive and negative memories. I do think that controlled dosing can make all the difference.
reply
I'd already had that idea after the conversation about jimi, but now I'm sure. No one should die without trying it at least once.
reply
I regret not having lived my teenage years in that time, it must have been quite enriching. Wasn't it Jimi who sold his soul to the devil?

Dazed and confused!

Haha, I meant more clinical than Hendrix, although that's useful context too.

I was sort of kidding. I tried a bunch of stuff back then. Some was scary, some beneficial. One thing is for sure, though. It taught me humility. I discovered quickly that I didn't have it all figured out even when I thought I did.
reply
I've used psilocibyn as part of a treatment for depression and it was very helpful. I have experienced with ayahuasca and peyote too. It's quite different if you use it only for recreational purposes. These are powerful medicines and must be used with respect and proper guidance.
reply
Depending on where you live - you might just be able to just try it out

Yes, and like with all new things…research is the key to success.

everything is good in moderation. it's the moderation most people have issues with...lol

Only psylocibin for me. Acid gave me permanent anxiety after dropping a dozen or so times. DMT is just too intense for me to do again, but I would recommend it at least once. Even heavy shroom use can be too intense for most and probably would do more harm than good. But microdosing psylocibin is what every SSRI wishes it could be. Everything else though is more harmful than beneficial to me personally.
From reading others comments here I just had an interesting thought. I wonder if the growing sentiment and possible legalization of psylocibin will attract the pharmaceutical companies making the anti depressants. If so I worry for the lobbying of regulation that could potentially pass making it harder for the average Joe to obtain spore kits in order to maintain profits for pharma. Maybe just a crackdown on the isolated chemical?

I would prefer Yoga and Meditation over psychedelics.

Agree about MDMA
Great for treating PTSD and bad dancing

I've read about this before and I think it can be very beneficial in certain situations
