I’m reading The Myths of Happiness by Sonja Lyubomirsky and can’t help thinking about how Bitcoin helps us to avoid the trappings of contemporary living. Lest you think that I’m putting Bitcoin on a pedestal and attributing panacea status to it, hear me out.
First, using Bitcoin in place of fiat checks us out of social comparison since we are still early adopters. While the rest of the world is going gaga over spot BTC ETFs, we are staking the real thing, one sat at a time. Many Bitcoiners place a premium on privacy and put in a concerted effort not to doxx themselves online, much less flex their material possessions and novel experiences on social media. Tuning into the mindset that things should be kept private and confidential diverts our attention from examining our income coequals. If they are into conspicuous consumerism and runway materialism, it is frankly none of our business.
Next, using Bitcoin may shield us from the effects of hedonic adaptation. Fiat comes with it the mentality that more is better and better will lead to more happiness. That’s why pay raises and bonuses lead us to feel emotionally empty after we get used to it. Heaven forbid that we fall prey to lifestyle inflation because we will then find that our enhanced salaries are actually inadequate to fulfill our increased “needs”. Bitcoin is, however, paired with a “stay humble, stack sats” mantra. The emphasis is not on attaining various predetermined financial targets, but on a lifelong pursuit of accumulating sats. Spend what your earn, and then replace. Since the focus is on the journey rather than the end goal, Bitcoiners may find the act of acquiring sats a flowing spring that affirms life and keeps on giving.
Also, some Bitcoiners will be interested to see how their sats can contribute to their communities and humanity. Orange pilling your favourite merchant may be troublesome, but doing so successfully stimulates upward spirals of positivity - including streams of endorphins, euphoric vibes and happy moods - because we successfully introduce a pleb to the best way of living there is. Stackers’ combined efforts to donate to Anita Posch’s work in Africa is another example.
Has Bitcoin bettered your mental health? Let me know in the comments below.
By allowing for the creation of Stacker News, Bitcoin has indirectly helped my mental health. I don’t spend any significant time out in the more toxic internet environments, anymore.
Directly, Bitcoin is a venture that I can take part in that really might improve the world in nontrivial ways. It’s powerful being part of something like this.

I kinda had an A-ha moment just now. That you being generous with your zaps yields you more satisfaction than simply taking profits off this site haha. That money pales in comparison to supporting others

This is the first time I came to this conclusion. And yes, I don't know if did it directly but I can tell you how much better I improved as a person in the financial aspect because now I feel safe saving my money.
Other times, if I let the money in my fiat account, the worrisome was terrible. How can I prevent the inflation? was my thought and the answer was already in my knowledge, so instead of just reasearch and teach people of what is bitcoin, I started to use as a currency. I'm happy with my choice.
Thank you for share this :)

I see how people around me get upset about dieing local currency, yell that dollar is so expensive, and.... they think I tell them about imaginary currency that will drop to zero. They don't deserve $70k Bitcoin as they didn't $16k

Bitcoin improves my mental health as well as gives me peace of mind I normally wouldn't have in a world of deficits, debasement, and financial repression/censorship.
I'm the weird one to worry about these things - and this worry is almost completely eliminated now.

I like your views but there are many many Bitcoiners (no they are just traders) who eventually lose everything they own just because they wanted to mke a few quick bucks!!! They are a shame!!!

I dont know for sure if it has bettered my mental health. Even when you have btc, you still worry about money.

Could becoming a father play a part in this?
I used to blissfully not care about money until I became a dad n now save waste paper to recycle for petty cents

Maybe you should hand over the finances to your wife? Then you wont have to worry about it? Being a father...I feel I dont worry about money as much. I saved when I was single, and I still save where I can. I havent run out of money yet. I try not to worry, and that helps a lot. I also try not to do things that dont pay off, like saving waste paper. Its just not worth the effort. I would rather put that extra time into reading to my kids. I should reiterate....I try not to worry excessively about money.

Are you kidding?! I refuse to be a henpecked salaryman and hand over control of my money to my wife! I mean, I m still henpecked but at least, my money is my own! Haha
Actually I don’t worry about money. It’s just that these days, I have set financial targets to reach before the year is up. So that’s why it’s pump in everything I got to make sure that I reach those goals. Whereas in the past, I was obsessed with travelling out of my country or Japan haha

After a while, having enough is good enough. The extra stress about worrying about making your goals wont mean much if you arent around to enjoy it. Saving is good. Investing is good. Saving and investing in bitcoin is better.

Yes I think it can help mental health immensely. I’m now more optimistic for the future and have a lower time preference.
I also suspect like many that there is a spiritual component to bitcoin - it’s a force of nature or something like that. There’s a kind of peace in that thought.

Having understood what problems Bitcoin was designed to solve, it puts me into perspective on how my economic life should be, and in a sense, my economic life is my entire life. Everything I do is a trade of my time; and I can transform my time into money, and vice versa. So, if this arrangement should be tempered with by whoever, my life is done. Therefore, learning and using Bitcoin has hedged me against most of the negative forces of life.
Thanks to Satoshi Nakamoto.
