In no way am I gonna every be fluent, but I have begun to point out things around me and go "oh I know that in Spanish."
I learned French as a kid for ~10 years so there's a good amount of overlap in how sentences are structured and even some common words. Probably helps me somewhat.

I stopped because I felt like I wasn't progressing much beyond what I learned in high school eons ago. I should probably try again given most of my patients speak spanish and our ipad translators are terrible.

Even if you don't learn new stuff, it's good to keep a decent vocabulary! Ive begun throwing French in as a change of pace if I need a Spanish break. It's been enjoyable to relearn some basics.
