Misconceptions.

I’ve been pondering the reward system and it’s affect on our decision making.
For the longest time I believed that in order to top the list you had to be a contributor to the site in more ways than just zapping and commenting.
As time went on, and after much discussion among the stackers. I felt I had a better grasp on what is required to climb the ladder.
Zap/post/comment “quality” content.
I did see my name jump the rankings. Yet, it all felt impersonal, rigid, stagnant.
Especially the conversation.
Quality content means something a little different for each of us.
I assumed (I think a lot of us do) that if I zap/post/comment factual information regarding the interests of the site it would be regarded as quality content and lead to more sats.
While this is true, it is not the deciding factor.
Purely by accident I hit the number 8 spot yesterday. I was in a bad mood due to my misconceptions and I let it fester.
1 post. 35 comments. 500 more sats stacked than spent. Nothing special. Most of the conversation centered around my bad mood and outbursts.
This site is about quality conversation, not posting what you think your fellow stackers would like to read (although it helps)
Three things:
  • Zap the things you like, and don’t be shy.
  • Foster discussion. The more comments you receive, zap, and respond -the more you will be trusted.
  • Don’t let your misconceptions rule your mind like I did.
@Undisciplined I tried my man.
@siggy47 Your calm demeanor gave me the last push I needed to see my misconceptions.

It’s discouraging to see the content you slave so hard over receive so little attention n zaps, but the good thing about SN is that while posts have a short shelf life, people do zap your posts from a while back. Just stay consistent n keep engaging n have fun.

Some content is really hit or miss. I have noticed that, but it gives you a pleasant surprise when someone comments on an old post that you have made :)

Great advice, thanks. I will take it to heart.

I went through a very similar learning experience. I was basically acting like a bitcoin news aggregator and posting anything and everything that I thought might be of interest.
At some point, I realized that it's a lot better to focus on the discussions and I began only posting stuff that I would like to discuss with others who are interested. Maybe no one is interested and the post goes unnoticed. No biggie.
What's most brilliant about the rewards system is that it allows the site to be really dynamic. As long as you're engaging with the community, you can stack rewards, so engage in the way that you find most fulfilling. As people do that, the site grows and adapts to each new community member.

We all need to be more clear and concise when saying this to newbies!

I think there’s a natural cycle where a new person figures this out and takes the initiative to articulate it. In doing so other new stackers are exposed to it. A few months ago it was @cryotosensei and a few months before that it was me.
This may just be something that each generation of Stackers has to learn for themselves.

Looking back it makes me feel like a fool. I still have a lot to learn. Thanks for the knowledge.

You figured it out faster than I did.

Unfortunately right now the rewards algo is so skewed to what it deems value you get people zapping a few top posts and making 2 or 3 comments and they get thousands more sats than some really great stackers that spend a lot of time engaging on the site.
Overall it is good but it needs tweaks.

Do you think it’s specific people or just something that can happen?
reply
It doesn’t happen all the time so I don’t think it’s people gaming the system. Maybe optimizing their comments and zaps but I don’t think it’s gaming the system otherwise we would see it all the time across multiple accounts.

Wow! A different view suddenly!
I only post comment and zap for fun. I take SN just like another social media but with more fun.

What I found interesting about SN is that we just need to try different things and anything can be value for stackers. You just can't post a comment or article with prejudices and definitely you shouldn't. I never ever will do it. If they zap my content, I feel they like it and they don't sometimes it doesn't matter because the content might relate somewhere else. SN is a place very different from other places. My perception only!

Interesting!
I would say that don't over think or over ponder.
Just try to follow V4V model while posting, zapping and commenting.

I'm happy to see you with a more pleasant disposition

hhhmm...not bad. Your discussion the other day must have helped your ranking!

Your perspective is very helpful and interesting. I've just started recently and haven't posted anything beyond my bio yet. However, I enjoy zapping the posts I comment on and zapping interesting responses from other Stackers, and sometimes commenting back. Actually, I'm becoming less shy and interacting more each day. Your advice of not being shy is indeed valuable.

Seems like you are off to a good start!

  • Don't put up a fake front: I let my mouth run amok sometimes, and still, people engage with me and my posts, and am doing quite well in regards to zaps.
Yeah, contributing "quality" content is important, but weirdly (or not) enough, its the posts that hit a nerve with people- and thus, emotional posts, that tend to do the best: My summary about the creation of the master seed has many times the effort, energy and time invested, than any of my more emotionally-tinted posts, yet the latter did almost always wildly better.
Simply write what you feel, only then you can't go wrong. 🌞🧡
