I just compare SN with what look is the standard in many many platforms across the web and something I miss is the option to receive notifications outside the platform.
SN at the moment is excellent on keeping stackers inside, but just when are already in. That little red square near the bell gives all us another little dose of dopamine and keep us browsing across territories.
Something that is missing is a way to bring back stackers that close the SN tab and maybe turn off the device. What if:
  • the weekly newsletter could be broadcasted outside SN? for example via email? or on nostr? (not sure it's already happening) SN long format profile look's pretty empty!
  • a summary of notification could be created and sent to stackers based on the medium used to signup (DM on nostr, DM on X, email to email or notification on github?!) it could look like just hey @stacker, you have 3 new posts from stackers you follow and 12 responses to your post XYZ
  • options to select the type of notifications and the medium to be delivered to in the setting page
I understand that it could be a breakthrough into privacy, I was just thinking about all the times I turn off the computer but still receiving some notifications on mobile.
What are your thoughts on this little marketing trick? You would sign up for it?

at the end of the day it's about the people I think, I'm here because I can keep learning new things and get different insights.
maybe you want to grow the base users slowly but attract the right types of ppl who come here to learn and share instead of ass-milking.
reply
I'm also here for the purpose of learning. I am new but I can say that I've become more of a reader here than anywhere else. You guys are amazing and there are so many posts of my interest here.
Thanks
reply
Gotcha, but there gonna always be right ppl and assmilkrs, everywhere, anyway. Just surprised to see a good 50% that want to keep SN as it is

maybe due to the deep drive for real human connection, share and learn? šŸ‘€

I don't see how one thing remove the other. Notifying existing users about events that relate to their previous activity can bring in more perspectives into the share&learn game and open up for more broader discussions.
Or are you saying that people that does not come back is because they aren't willing to share and learn more about this wonderful community?
reply
I used to receive the SN Sat newsletter in my email, but I unsubscribed from it because I took to the habit of spending time here haha.
If I were inactive, what would make me come back are the relationships I have made with Stackers from this sub. I wonder if there could be a service in which I write a few words and pass it to the team, who would then forward it to the Stackerā€™s email address. A personal ā€œappealā€ might work better than news items.
My two satsā€™ worth
reply
That's similar to the "summary of notification could be created and sent to stackers" idea. If you see what your social circle has been doing, especially the comments they've left you, you'd probably want to hop back on.
reply
What do you mean for personal "appeal"? how do you see it working? SN.telepathy?

Howdy @Bitman
I hope this finds you well n your chronic condition is under control.
I think of you whenever I post something about Japan because I will be curious to know what you have to share. Your anecdotes on Japan make my day. I also think of your favourite Aesopā€™s fable.
I am waiting for your return on SN. xP Take care.
ā€”- I would have tagged him a long time ago, but I doubt he patronises SN these days. Hence, my email idea. Haha
reply
that's exactly what I mean. You can tag as much as you want but if people do not voluntarily login into SN they never gonna see it

Just keep building

isn't this an idea to keep building and growing šŸ¤”

agree!

When you start with incorrect, unresearched information, it becomes difficult for me to pay much mind to what follows.
reply
understandable. I'll make more attention in the future. English isn't my first language and maybe the idea got lost with the translation.
Are you referring to the first point about the newsletter?
reply
obviously
reply
yeah, I should have not mention that at all, it just created confusion
reply
Some folks got passed it, which goes to show what a great group of folks we have on SN. And great job for a non-native English speaker!
reply
Thanks you! Still learning everyday and here SN gives a great opportunity to practice

At least where SN doesn't need to do something, I'm more interested in incentivizing stackers to do it. It's less obvious how this should work, and is harder to pull off, but I think such a solution would solve the problem more sustainably.
It requires answering questions like:
  1. what would encourage people more likely to share posts/comments from SN on other social media sites?
  2. what would encourage people to invite their friends here?
  3. what would encourage people to participate here more?
These are questions we'll need great answers to if we want to grow autonomously.
reply
I like these ideas a lot. They purely appeal to people who already know and like Stacker News.
reply
How many people know and like SN but only visit occasionally.
Like e.g. the difference between daily active users and monthly active users.
reply
Probably not very many.
reply
I agree and that's why I'm proposing this idea. People is busy and a reminder in their preferred medium could help bring more traffic to SN from monthly (and yearly) active users.
reply
I don't check the newsletter either because I log in to SN every day and find out about almost everything.
reply
Well, not everyone log in to SN everyday. The weekly newsletter via email and YT it's fine but it's just about the top contents. I was more thinking of the same, let's say via email, just about stuff I react to or create
reply
The weekly newsletter goes to email if you signed up via email.
reply
yeas noted, thanks! it's anyway about the top weekly post. this idea is more about the content relevant to a specific user

how are you providing 5,5% of the value SN is sharing across the community?
reply
Looking for my attention? Here, another opportunity to down āš” me. šŸ˜˜
I don't see any need to broadcast anything outside SN. SN is a self surviving module and it has its community. Getting it outside SN may get new stackers here but how do you see it as a retainment of existing stackers?
Though I like the 2nd idea of showing collaborated notifications. But how do you see them sending to someone as DM's on X (Twitter)?
I can't understand the third one. It doesn't make any sense, IMO. May be you can make me understand this point a little better.
reply
Not sure I explained clear enough in the description above. My aim is not to spread SN contents, it's about find a way to notiy people that has already signup to invite them to come back.
The notifications aren't not about the contents. See it like a summary of all notifications delivered to your preferred login/signup medium
But how do you see them sending to someone as DM's on X ? Everything is possible, maybe a bot account on x that sends DMs? not really sure about the technicalities
there's not 3rd one, it's a continuation, (skipping the first point about teh newsletter that has already been covered) fo example if you signup with X, and linked your nostr npub too, you could be able to select where to receive these DMs from the setting page
reply
The big thing is always going to be interaction that isn't malignant. I wonder if an RSS feed type of system could be leveraged?
reply
rss feeds are already here, but again, only cover the landing page feed and territories. you can try:
Maybe a personalised one, sourced from the territories, stackers and post that ones follows could be definitely a good idea
reply
Yes tor everything you just said but ita already happening as i can see.
reply
Imo it should all be about growing organically, which is hard to do. Perhaps less Bitcoin but more diverse topics etc.
Otherwise it can become the same topic over and over again.
reply
make sense, organic growth also need water, and if the water is not retained, all the effort to water it are vane or slightly significant.
I agree in your point oof diversifying the topic, but looking at the territory cemetery look's like many non-bitcoin related topic have really short life around here.
reply
I have to agree.
Tbf It's not like we can't have a Bitcoin specific forum as well, I commonly go to dpreview for photography discussion. And we also have bitcointalk which I still got every once awhile.
Perhaps a better user profile or a more traditional layout would work better?
reply
I've been mentioning this territories issue too... #548398
reply
Great initiative!
I personally think while having to spend SATs to post/comments are great way to filter out spam/low effort, it also deter casual commenting.
I also think the layout stacker news currently have don't quite make it easy for users to see posts from other territories
reply
Since I keep my browser open 100% of the time, my solution is to enable push notifications in the settings. Since it uses the WebPush API, it works even when I don't have any SN tabs open.
This way works pretty well for me, since then I get a sense of when I have to check SN.
The only reason I'd care for notification via external service would be if I ever get to the point where I have so much interaction on SN that I need it summarized for me.

Also, the weekly newsletter does go out by email.

true, I missed it on the setting page
reply
oh yes I know it's broadcasted. True is that in YT you get notifications on subscribed channels, but that does not bring you back to SN. I'm referring more to text format contents (or better, summary of contents)
