Nirvana for sure, but I could be acoustic biased.

Do you play?

No. I wouldn't even say I listen lol. Do you?
I just like the relatively indefinite range of acoustic instruments. It sounds warmer and more real.
Someone shared an insight with me recently that's kind of relevant: a musician is touches their audience with air.
reply
Yes, I play guitar. As I have gotten older I definitely appreciate acoustic a lot more. I haven't played electric guitar in years now but I pick up my acoustic all the time.

Nirvana for me, they made this song sound like it was theirs. Awesome track.

Nirvana for me, unrelated that unplugged was probably 1 of the 1st CDs I ever bought

I feel like Garbage is one of the few bands with the balls to cover Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the ability to back it up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsOHvP1XnRg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgAujpyDyTM

I like Siouxsie's version. It's more upbeat. Garbage's makes my mind dress me in black leather and chains.
reply
Siouxie - Cocaine
Garbage - Heroin
Don't ask...
reply
🤣🤣 that's one helluva description.
reply
I'm pretty sure Garbage would say "mission accomplished."
reply
Garbage was great here, I'm leaning Siouxsie and the banshee. I just vibe with that a little more.
reply
I'm going to say Garbage only narrowly though thanks to @koob being forced into leather and chains

Nothing Compares 2 U - Written by Prince
I first heard it from The Time spin-off group The Family as a pot smoking college student.
Then Sinead O'Connor "stole" it, but took it to the world, and then showed herself worthy.
Here is His Royal Badness Himself.
reply
Sinéads version is lovely. And I enjoyed the family's take on it too, but HRH Prince is forever a special special musician.
reply
Prince plus that fancy footwork

The Family's version has better harmonies.
reply
It is my fav, but I'm nostalgic.
reply
I don't know if necessarily better, but pretty dang good and I listen to both regularly.
Original: Steve Earle - Feel Alright https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OHTLioJGXb4
Also, it served as an excellent soundtrack to the ending montage to the second season of The Wire.
Cover: Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers - I Feel Alright
reply
I'm with Bellzer, "fuller" is a pretty apt description. I'm liking this cover.
reply
Something about the cover sounds...fuller? Is that just the recording possibly?
reply
I'm not exactly sure, could just be the style of Earle vs Clyne. Based on his other music Earle has more of a singer songwriter mixed with Alternative Country vibe, while Clyne often has southwestern alt-rock background. He used to be in a band called The Refreshments out of I think Tempe, AZ.

It's GnR, it has to be right? This track for them was so iconic.
reply
Yeah, that's what I'm going with. Although I do think the original is very good.

They did a great job with the cover.

Sorry I'm so late to the party!
And a pretty decent job by Mr Travis Tritt. https://youtu.be/fazzYvpjhq0?si=UqGiVDbDs8ZwY0eR
To my knowledge he did perform this with the eagles at one point. So clearly they liked his version.
reply
I've always liked this song! I do prefer the original, but the cover is pretty good too.
reply
I agree with this

Anything covered by Johnny Cash has a different weight to it.
#Hurt Nine Inch Nails (original) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42V6ho11NSw
Cash's version was so great Trent Reznor even said when he saw the videoclip for the song he felt the song wasn't his anymore.
Also... Does a different singer in the same band count as cover?
If so...

Dead and Bloated

Stone Temple Pilots (Scott Weiland vocals) (original) https://youtu.be/SCx_uiSdC_c
Stone Temple Pilots (Chester Bennington vocals) (cover) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Awz5a6E6mk0
reply
I wouldn't call Chester's a cover but I do always think it's kind of weird when bands keep the name but have a new lead. I've always kind of avoided Chester's STP but that was really good.
reply
His interpretations are great. He does not try to add his own spin to songs. He was a fan of STP and wanted to give STP fans what they wanted, or something close to it.

That birds of Tokyo version hits different. His voice is fantastic. Really raw sounding, packed full of emotion. Really really cool.
reply
I actually didn't know the original until after I heard the cover
