Stubbornly scooping M&M’s from the floor, I learned my mother’s toughness. Now it is mine.
Waking to her sing-song charades, I paraded in mom’s silliness Of which my own is an echo.
Digging my hands in the dirt, I memorized a catalog of flowers And weeds as she spoke them to me.
Plinking songs on piano keys, Spending all day outside, Having some sense of sports,
A satisfaction from scrapbooks, Sneaking seconds of sweets, Hunting through cheap antiques,
Her lessons are lived Through her spirit, her voice, In her touch, by her strength.
There’s no friend like my mother. Her life is signified in mine, A gentle reminder of her presence.
