Those who receive the bare theories immediately want to spew them, as an upset stomach does its food. First digest your theories and you won't throw them up. Otherwise they will be raw, spoiled, and not nourishing. After you've digested them, show us the changes in your reasoned choices, just like the shoulders of gymnasts display their diet and training, and as the craft of artisans show in what they've learned. - Epictetus
Gall's Law states that all complex systems that work evolved from simpler systems. If you want to build a complex system that works, build a simple system first, and then improve it over time. - Josh Kaufman
Been a bit busy today and didn't have much time to think through and write a post so thought I would share two quotes I came across this week that resonated.
The first was today's quote from The Daily Stoic basically implying that a stoic should strive to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk.
And the second was timely for me because I've been thinking about football tactics all week and how I wanted to present the many ideas in my head to my team, but this quote and Gall's Law reminded me that I should just start with the basics and start with something simple and build off that foundation. Can be applied to Bitcoin as well given at it's core it is very simple in design and yet so elegant.

“Show don’t tell” is also common storytelling advice.

Indeed. I came here expecting to gain tips on how to include sensory details in my writing haha

Use strong nouns and verbs. Avoid adjectives.

Could you expound a bit more about when it would be counterproductive to use adjectives? I get how adverbs may make one’s writing weak but not adjectives.
In Singapore, we are schooled to employ adjectives to enliven our writing - but perhaps I’m talking about the context of having children and teens writing narratives and personal recounts.
reply
Same idea -- it just waters things down. Often there's a strong noun that obviates the need for an adjective.
These rules are just shorthand, of course there's a place for adjectives, adverbs, and everything -- that's why they exist. But in general, you should use them as sparsely as you can manage.
(Also, I should have said "avoid adjectives and adverbs" -- didn't realize I omitted adverbs.)

Thanks! I will now examine your writing with a fresh pair of eyes and think about how I need to evolve. I have an affinity for adjectives, particularly ‘very’ adjectives. Like hilarious means very funny, seamless means very smooth etc. hah

Stoicism is hard core. I listen to it a lot when I am at work. I have it playing in the background, reading quotes. Many times it hits a cord, because I know it to be true.

It makes you turn negative emotions into thoughts that in turn give us a unique perspective of the world.

More SN users need stoicism

It sounds right and is easy to understand. But it is hard to live it.

He muted you? No way, l thought he always liked the chance to educate people.
I think you will be fired up by Gretchen Rubin’s words as seen below:
Since I post daily on SN, I stacked one more habit on top of it recently: cross-post my writing here on my personal blog every day. I don’t care if it takes a lifetime; I just want to withdraw $150 from Google Adsense at least once. Living by habits that matter to me personally makes me feel powerful.
I also related to your second quote. I suggest you think about where your team is and meet them where they are. For example, I have two students who can’t spell “How are you?” I m not kidding; their memory is that bad. So every time they come to school, I give them my coloured letters and force them to spell out this sentence. There is no shame in getting the basics right!

I made my students write 7 vocabulary words 3 times each... the next time the head teacher came in and told me I couldnt do that anymore because it is too hard on the students. I made them turn in their writing before they left the class at the end of the day.

These quotes are great and so true!
First digest your theories and you won't throw them up.
Yes!!!!

This post reminded me of a quote I once read "keep it simple and stupid" referring to the fact that even the most complex systems can be organized in such a simple way of functioning that it seems somewhat stupid given the complexity. Thanks for sharing
