I'm finally doing it, @cryotosensei. I've given some thought to how to sustainably take profits from my use of Stacker News. I probably won't start until after this month's MSM concludes, because I'm still guilt zapping away my ill-gotten rewards from last month.

Optimal Zapping Behavior

Previously, I wrote about how to find your optimal zapping strategy for Stacker News: #287074. Despite that being my highest ranked post, people are still radically underzapping (but that's not the point of this post).
That strategy uses the waxing and waning of my SN wallet balance to inform what my default zap ought to be. The problem with this strategy is that it converges on a zero profit point. I'm happy to recirculate my Stacker News earnings, so this problem didn't bother me.
Zap bigger. Zap oftener. Zap earlier.

Profit Taking

Since I was already using my current balance to optimize zapping, I couldn't use it to also optimize profit taking. However, I can still use the growth rate of my SN balance to inform profit taking. Optimal profit taking would mean my balance remains stable.
The approach I came up with is to withdraw my average daily net earnings. If Stacker News grows or I get better at using it, then my daily profits will grow.
I've been on SN for 537 days and have 395.9k in my wallet, so I would withdraw 737 sats per day with this strategy. Hopefully that will grow. Even with my optimistic estimate for the value of sats (#474759), that's not a lot.

Why bother?

A big part of SN's pitch is that you can earn sats by contributing here. Of course, you can do that without jumping through these hoops.
In part, I just like thinking about this kind of stuff, but the rewards system also makes the optimal usage of SN non-obvious. How much you should zap depends on what you're zapping, when you're zapping, and how much other stackers are zapping. How much you should take in profits depends on how much you're getting back in rewards and how much you should be zapping.
I like simple methods that converge on optimality, rather than trying to fully solve a system analytically and derive the optimal solution.

TL;DR

  • Have a dedicated SN wallet.
  • Use turbo zaps to zap 1/100th for great posts, 1/1000th for good posts, 1/10,000th for good comments.
  • Withdraw daily profits = wallet balance / days on SN
I recommend cashing in your SN profited sats for gift cards using the Bitcoin company. Keep the circular sat economy going and feed the fiat beast a little less. Buy some groceries with sats, it's fun.
reply
Buy prepaid Visa cards with bitcoin and spend them almost anywhere.
YOU ARE LITERALLY GOING BACK TO USE VISA AND FIAT. That, right there is NOT Bitcoin adoption.
"The Bitcoin Company" is actually a VISA company... not talking also about tracking your spending behavior...
You are literally supporting merchants to keep accepting fiat over VISA and not Bitcoin. We will NEVER EVER have Bitcoin adoption using these. The goal is to convince as many merchants you can to accept DIRECTLY BTC.
reply
"The Bitcoin Company" is actually a VISA company...
No, they aren't issuing cards themselves, they act as a proxy merchant for VISA gift cards issued by some other company.
reply
So in the end they actually sell VISA cards. What's the difference? Is not the final merchants still accepting fiat with these cards?
Let's not hide behind the tree.... let's say the thing as they are.
FFS I can'r believe , I am debating with bitcoiner if merchants should accept BTC or VISA fiat cards ! At this point I really don't know why are we still fighting... let's just use fiat all the way.
FIAT DELENDA EST! If people do not understand the meaning of this... idk know why we are still here.
funny enough the comment comes from a guy that want to "defend" privacy... shilling for use of visa cards... right.
reply
I mean technically - if you are shop that also sells bread, are you bread company? Don't think so.
And there is Bitcoin economy involved, proxy merchants can earn BTC for themselves by getting rid of fiat, without using centralized exchanges. TBC is basically proxy merchant company, VISA cards is only one of their products, they sell various gift cards. Same as Bitrefill, for example.
And I don't shill anything. But they can be helpful, when you really need to pay for something and only have sats and no way to pay with sats directly. Let's say, you need to pay for a taxi to the airport in the middle of the night in random foreign country.

If they do not accept sats, I will just walk away.
BITCOIN OR NOTHING.
please do not make me to lower my appreciation to your reputation. I was expecting this kind of comment from other shitcoiners but not from you.
reply
So, I should say to my wife, no more vacations to other countries where I can't pay for everything with sats directly? No travelling to Bitcoin conferences, if I can't pay for everything I need in that city with sats directly?
reply
What about NO vacations at all and stack more sats? BTC conferences are a wasting time and money anyways...
I was intentionally agnostic about where those sats go, but that seems to be working for Sensei.
I'm curious why that's better than buying the groceries with a Fold card and stacking sat rewards. Aren't you basically paying someone else to pay the company fiat?
Personally, I'd rather hold on to my sats until I find someone who is actually accepting payment in bitcoin.
reply
That's true probably better to pay your fiat and stack your sats and bitcoin company isn't paying for those gift cards in bitcoin so at some point they are converting to fiat to pay Kroeger for the gift card. You do get some sats back rewards on your sat purchase but mostly it is a novelty at this point. Maybe if there is enough demand for it companies will learn to sell gift cards in bitcoin and keep the bitcoin on their balance sheet. Also feels like you are kind of dipping your toe into living on bitcoin lifestyle.
I wish I could use fold in Canada but alas they don't offer the debit card and only a few retailers for gift cards. I don't even think you can get a fold account in Canada anymore but I was such an early user they let me stay and spin their wheel every day. Unfortunately, they don't offer 250 sats a week any more for spinning every day so it will take me a decade before I can withdraw again unless they enable lightning. Haha. I am going to wait them out. I and my 17k sats in fold can remain irrational longer than they can remain lightningless.

That's the appealing part to me.

That's exactly our situation with freebitcoin, too.
Can you buy bitcoin through Fold? The spins from DCA'ing can add up reasonably quickly.

Personally I don't withdraw any daily profits and it sounds weird, profit? šŸ˜‚
and I would suggest using the sats stacked here to support Bitcoiners' businesses.
reply
I agree.
Someday, I'd like this to be a meaningful part of my income, though. That's what made me want to think about how to approach it.

I just use my SN profits to purchase Mullvad VPN service through https://vpn.sovereign.engineering/

I love the simplicity of this solution.

Unfortunately, even if I never withdraw SN zaps I don't ever earn enough sats. You need alot of sats to get $1.
reply
It takes a little while to get in an earning groove. If you contribute regularly, though, your stack will grow.

  1. You're only here to take and not give back?
  2. Hope it at least stays in the wider Lightning ecosystem
  3. Daily is unnecessary. If you really have to, at least scale it down to monthly transactions
reply
  1. You fundamentally don't understand economics and the idea of V4V: there's no way for me to generate a profit here without "giving back". Also, you should check the spending stats for SN before you start casting aspersions.
  2. Who cares?
  3. It would be the same quantity either way, so why does the frequency matter?
