One common tool for scammers is to create fake marks -- either folks who had "success" with the thing that's scamming you (the guy who "wins" at three card monte before you lost ten times), or who get "paid back" after the scam somehow. If you really know and trust the guy you referred, this might not be the latter, but otherwise it still sounds super fishy.

Exactly my thought. I honestly doubt anyone got paid out.
