In these recent past weeks I've had some beautiful, in-depth conversations with two of my publishing songwriter clients. I've been able to slow down and truly listen to their artistic convictions, while also gaining much more meaning in our personal and business relationships.
For those of you that are working directly with artists/creators, I urge you to not ever take those moments for granted. It is when I've learned the most about how to best support the songwriters that have entrusted their compositions with my publishing company. In every case, it has taken time, patience, and being intentional, to get to the core of what truly matters.
This has not always aligned with what I thought to be important. However, in truly listening to what keeps each of them creating in spite of so many challenges, and instead choosing to align with that raw vision, it has shown me that this is a two-way street that we're on. I continue to learn and grow so much from the relationships built with the songwriters I represent; it is truly my favorite part of the work I do.
It is also a reminder that I am a human representing another human's creative output. This makes it more personal, and really all about catching the nuance of expression in each of us.
