Don't Mock Me
I am taking a break from my new found addiction to NFL mock draft simulators to do my daily post.
It might be a good time for a break, as initially I was taking the process very seriously- identifying positional needs for the 49ers and which positions carry more value, but it has devolved into me trying to make as many trades as possible to acquire an absurd amount of picks for moving down the draft board. Recently I turned 11 picks into 23. Quantity over Quality I guess.
Heard an interesting stat on the broadcast of the Heat vs Nuggets game last night. The commentators were noting that Phil Jackson once said for a team to be elite and a true championship contender they need to win their 40th game before they lose their 20th. Although seemingly just an arbitrary threshold it seems to ring somewhat true as out of the last 30 champions only 3 have not met this criteria. Could be small sample bias but that is pretty interesting. Based on this threshold only 4 teams have a chance at the Championship this year. Celtics, TWolves, Thunder and Nuggets.
Honestly, if you gave me the field vs those 4 teams I would probably take the field even though the Celtics or the Nuggets probably do end up winning the Championship. As much as I like OKC and Minny, I don't think they are real contenders.
Who would you take? The top Four or the rest of the playoff field?

I would take the field. I just find it more interesting and fun to have an unexpected result and also see an underdog win.
reply
I would take Nuggets or Celtics vs the field myself. I think they're the two best teams by an enormous margin.
Btw, how are the 49ers mock drafts going? You getting a good slate?
reply
Drafts were going well. I got Jerry Rice's son in one of them and CMCs brother in another. Trying to load up on OLine help.
How about a small wager? 1k sats. You take Celtics, Nuggets, Twolves and Thunder and I will take whatever the remainder of the playoff field ends up being.
reply
I'm all over that action!
Who are you're best chances? I guess Bucks and Clippers
reply
Likely. Maybe Suns. Maybe 76ers if Embiid returns and gets back to MVP form. But probably Bucks or Clippers are best bet.
I still think it will be Celtics or Nuggets but I am covering a lot of ground with the field if someone gets hurt or there is a big upset of one of those two teams.
reply
Out of the field, I'm only worried about the Clippers. Kawhi at peak form is more than capable of carrying a team to a title.
reply
If they can keep Kawhi and PG healthy I wouldn't count them out. What about the Knicks as a darkhorse? If Randle can come back healthy of course.
reply
Randle's a losing player. I kind of like him, but I'm happy to bet against him. Brunson's another story entirely. I don't want to be anywhere near him in a clutch scenario.
In the East, I'm most worried about the Heat just being in the Celtics heads and psychologically destroying them.
reply
Yeah, got to watch out for Heat come playoff time.
Uh oh. You've jumped on the NFL mock draft Sims aswell... I just can't stop.
reply
Oh Vikings would be a fun one.
Who you drafting in the 1st round?
reply
I want Byron Murphy 2. But I think our GM might get lynched if he doesn't draft a QB in the 1st. I'm expecting him to either trade all the way up for Maye, Williams or Daniels. But if not, gimme Murphy 2 or Newton if he falls down there (doubtful) if neither are there. Trade back get some 2nd round capital, take a JPJ with a late 1st then get penix or nix in the 2nd. And then mash D line get some 300lb dudes who can stuff the run and generate a pass rush, our corners would probably be alright (but sure go draft one of those aswell) if they weren't hung out to dry with the lack of any pressure generated in the front 4.

How's the Viking fandom feeling about trading up?
That's the big topic in Raider Nation as well and we're extremely divided on it.
reply
Very split. Lots of people saying if kwesi doesn't mortgage the future and draft a "sure fire qb" (please no one's ever a sure fire... Remember trubisky? Or the chosen josh Rosen?) That he should be fired if he misses on getting our QB for the future.
But fundamentally if we can resign Kirk to a 2year? Maybe 3 year... And just build out our trenches, I think we're onto something. Still need a future QB but I don't think it's the end of the world if we don't get into the top 3 for one.
reply
That's very similar to how I felt when we parted ways with Carr. He's a very flawed QB, but he's also proven himself to be a starting caliber NFL QB, which most of the rookies will not be.
I would rather let other teams overpay in draft capital for rookie QB's (as long as we have a serviceable one) and pick more surefire guys at other positions.
reply
Nailed it. That's pretty much my thoughts on it. I think Kirk is a QB you can win a SB with. But I don't know if he's a QB you can win a SB because of. Chasing the next Pat Mahomes on a rookie contract seems to be everyones play at the moment. But the thing they forget about mahomes... Is he sat behind Alex smith and had smith tutor him for a year before taking over. Lots of organisations just chuck their rookie into the game and when they bust they cast them off and look for someone else. I understand the NFL is Not For Long, but you gotta give these kids time to develop.
reply
Do you think the Vikings would be willing to bring Cousins back on maybe a 2yr deal and also draft a QB of the future so they could develop under him?
Of course that would be dependent on Cousins willingness as well to sign a shorter term deal. I am sure a lot of teams will be interested in him but not sure if he gets a long term deal.
We will see what Williams is when he reaches the pros. All the talent in the world but I was unimpressed with his second half of the season. Personally I like JJ the best. He is a winner.
reply
Penix looked dy-no-mite against the longhorns... And more like an exploded mess against the wolverines... 🤣🤣 I hope you're right about McCarthy as I think he's the realistic guy we could get at 11.
reply
You guys might be able to trade back a few spots and still get JJ.
reply
I'm not completely sold on McCarthy. That Michigan offense didn't exactly showcase him all that well. But if he's there at the right price, we do need to secure our QB of the future.
reply
He is a bigger Purdy. 27-1 as a starter. 49TDs/11INTs.
He is not going to be a Mahomes/Allen/Jackson game changer but he is going to be a good, winning QB.
reply
From all accounts he's the prototype QB that our HC wants. A guy who can push the ball down field and operate our air assault game. We got Jefferson, Addison, Hockenson.. we have a trio of fantastic receiving threats. We gotta get a QB that will be able to get them the ball. But watching his tape, it's really hard to discern the difference between his ability and the ability of the Michigan offense to put him in the right spots. I hope he's got it, cos if he does, he's going to be 🔥
