Give me your predictions for the next 3, 6, 12 months.

And then we'll see if you were right or not.

Will add my predictions as a comment since I need to think about them more first.

i think someone is going to start a ~politics territory and get a ton of activity in the lead up to the 2024 election

reply

Wouldn't politics just fit nicely under the news territory.

reply

i guess it could, but news is so broad that it could encompass a lot of things that people interested in politics might not want to see

reply

I think that is going to attract a lot of riffraff to the site.

definitely possible, it’s one of those topics that basically anyone can have an opinion on (regardless of whether they know anything about it).

reply

By far, the most tedious threads I've been on have been with political partisans.

reply

Not just US. There are 70+ elections around the world this year. I fear such a territory would become a bit of punch up.

reply

There's a post where for the most part it was respectful and good debate, discussing guns and abortions. That was intense but like I said for the most part people were decent in that discussion.

reply

just to add some more noise... and as if there are elections on the US only! @SN should start to think a bit more openly if it wants to scale

My personal predictions

Easy picks are ~bitcoin, ~jobs, ~nostr, ~meta and ~tech. These are the OG territories (they existed before we launched territories in early December) and will thus be here forever.

I predict that my own territories will also be here forever, so that's ~security, ~oracle and ~crypto.

I tried to evaluate every other territory by following metrics:

  • Are they related to bitcoin in some way?
  • Is there a dedicated stacker behind them that probably won't give up easy and might still make it work (if it doesn't already)?
  • How much organic activity is there already?
  • Did the founder react to the maintenance costs in some way on SN? If so, how?

👑 Territories that will definitely make it to 12 months from now:

~BooksAndArticles, ~Stacker_Sports, ~mostly_harmless, ~ideasfromtheedge, ~podcasts, ~privacy

🟢 Territories that should make it to 6 months:

~bitdevs, ~AGORA, ~AMA, ~art, ~devs, ~earth, ~lightning, ~Design, ~Music, ~builders, ~ecash, ~econ, ~Dogs_And_Cats, ~health, ~history, ~libertarian, ~lightning, ~NixOS, ~opensource, ~retrogaming, ~DeepDive

🟡 Territories that might make it to 3 months:

~Cannabis, ~christianity, ~bitcoin_beginners, ~DIY, ~hiphop, ~mempool, ~news, ~Personal_Finance, ~science, ~startups, ~UFOs

🔴 Territories I am not sure are going to see the light of mid-May:

~B2B, ~lol, ~dotnet

This should include every territory. It was actually quite fun to evaluate every one of them since some were very interesting to look at. I visited territories I never visited before. For example, ~DeepDive looked pretty dead but then I read the description and it makes sense. This is the most interesting territory I've seen. Will keep a close eye on this one.

Also, I did not consider the effects of future features like crossposting. Currently, posts are limited to a single territory so I believe territories are currently cannibalizing each other for attention. With crossposting, we might see a lot of activity on a lot more territories.

I hope no one feels offended by my highly biased evaluation since it's just my personal opinion. Also, you can see this as motivation or honest feedback. If you don't agree with some evaluation, I would also be open for discussion about it. Maybe I missed something? I also probably didn't give every territory the same amount of due diligence. For most territories, I just took a very quick peek (like a few seconds). Additionally, we currently can't see when a territory was founded. So some territories might just be very young.

I did not intend to create a list that in some way might be similar to credit ratings, but looking at it now, some people might see it as one, lol.

😱😱😱😱 @ek I find your lack of faith disturbing, 6 months? I'm sure I can do better than than 😉. But having the users become a little more zap happy sure would help.

reply

Haha, was waiting for someone to say this!

I find your lack of faith disturbing

https://m.stacker.news/16566

I'm sure I can do better than that 😉

Well, I guess the challenge is on 😉

reverse psychology at its finest

But having the users become a little more zap happy sure would help.

Territory reward pools should help as mentioned in the SN pitch deck. But only if there are posts that stackers want to zap.

I want to keep learning Piano. When I have some songs down in full, I intend to record them and post them in ~Music. Maybe even with video like this:

view on www.youtube.com

I really want to know how they do such cool videos

reply

Still here 12 months in bud 💪💪

Apparently I can stay solvent and stupid longer than given credit for 🤣🤣

reply

Sorry I never got back to this, i must have missed the notification! Absolutely I think we should be able to upload audio directly to SN. Hearing you play, hell I even owe siggy a vocal line to his Coinkite blues track. But I have no idea how to get audio onto SN. That could be a cool little feature. Personally I think that would really help ~Music out, giving small budding artists a place to throw a sample line of something of theirs and someone pick that up and work with them, it'd be great, like a little spot for demos.

reply

Nice evaluation. I think all of us assume that we're all ordinary plebs looking to do what we can to improve SN, aid adoption, and maybe earn a few sats eventually. The SN deck that was posted yesterday got me thinking differently about the future. There also may be investors out there who think that owning a few territories might be a fairly inexpensive way of investing in SN long term. Perhaps they may buy some territories without our concern about breaking even now.

reply

~mempool might be such a territory.

This post also got me thinking that crowdfunding the upkeep of a territory could also work by betting against its continued existence in prediction markets. Kind of like assassination markets but for territories, lol.

The owner can then bet against to win the money but they'll have to renew. It's basically reverse psychology.

With such prediction markets, one could source funds additionally from the ones that don't believe in a territory. So if this is complemented by normal crowdfunding (people who want to keep the territory can send sats to the owner directly without a market), this might be a very interesting way to maintain territories 👀🤔

reply

Yes! I like this. (For a little while I was wondering who this ek guy was.)

reply

My assessment is based on the perception of territory usage and user interests. Logically, a territory owner can always keep the territory alive even if it is not profitable. In this context, it is very difficult to make predictions with any degree of certainty.

reply

Trying mate, with the community support we're doing really well.

reply

There are currently 49 territories. I expect that to whittle down to 10-15 by end of 2024.

I would rather predict how many territories will be around than which one's will fall off.

I will say 12 territories by end of 2024.

reply

Not looking so grim atm, mate.

reply

I am happy to admit I was completely wrong. The commitment and resiliency of territory owners has been impressive.

reply

Yeah, I am excited to watch it grow.

reply

~BooksandArticles
~Design
~Health

Because Sensei will commit himself to posting regularly/semi-regularly in these territories and forwarding the founders some happy sats 😝

reply

Thanks for your trust on ~Design :)

I don't want to predict anyone's demise, so I'll just say that I expect the territories I frequent to be around long term:
~econ
~Stacker_Sports
~libertarian
~BooksAndArticles

Re: #428575 by @030e0dca83

I think localized territories will not make much sense in the long run, just because if @SN want to expand and grow, enabling multilanguage support is a must!

reply

Why didn't you simply reply to them?

reply

It was a mistake and fixed adding that first line of the comment!

reply

We territory owners have inside information.

reply

Into territories we don't own?

reply

We'll, yeah. I didn't want to bring it up publically, but I have taken up mind reading, and I also am developing special powers to discover other's btc balances:)

reply

I hope for more territories to join. While I understand there is a cost plus community to be built as more users find the website I hope everyone find a sub group and they might rebrand their space.

reply

If bullrun hits the market we will see something like ~alts, ~nocoinersLetters, ~fuckUpSyories, ~21millionsClub and many other localized territories like ~chinese, ~ru, ~spanish

I hope we'll see the undate with sub-sub territories, they'll be cheapers but extand main territory

reply

I predict that ~Memes and ~Movies will be around as long as SN still exists (which I hope is forever)

reply

I would like to have ~chess back.

reply

Bitcoin is ALL Season

reply

Profitable ones, and those run by enthusiasts who have deep in their pockets, I mean, Bitcoin hearts.

reply

Meta and Bitcoin will be around for many years.
