Do you believe that suffering actually builds character or do you believe this is a low-effort idiom that we use to try to find a silver lining in dealing with the darkest depths of the human experience? Or do you believe this saying comes from somewhere else?

I do.. and by suffering im not talking about tourture.. more like struggle
Leave your contry with pocket money.. you will struggle and definitly build character.. as example..
Also, looking back, the harder the moments, the more you grow

"the harder the moments, the more you grow"
I don't think we necessarily learn more in absolute terms, but I do agree that there is more potential for growth because we remember the lessons more profoundly because of the struggle.

It's less so suffering specifically and more so experience. Most worthwhile experiences involve some degree of suffering though.
A friend of mine likes to say there are two types of fun. Type 1 which is fun in the moment but not after the fact and Type 2 which is not fun in the moment but fun after the fact. The period of time "after the fact" lasts longer than a moment, possibly the rest of a lifetime.

Got it. Disciplined action with the determination to endure hardship to get to the other side of a goal.
