Any predictions on what this release might entail?

Is anyone using Umbrel OS? If yes, what for? Would you recommend it? I found it when I was looking for some ideas how to run my own Bitcoin node on pi4 or pi5. It seems like they are offering a raspberry pi with umbrel os as a solution for it. Does it make sense to go this way?

No, don’t use a pi to run a node. An old laptop is more reliable.

Umbrella has a whole bunch of apps available on their OS which optimize and make a bunch of services easy. Robosats (the LN DEX) is an example. Besides my bitcoin node, I'm probably using Umbrel for Radarr most right now, which basically allows you to build an entire media library and share it with anyone. I'm also a BitTorrent guy, and because Radarr uses Transmission (it's a BitTorrent client), you can basically configure it to monitor and index rss coms, so whenever a new movie or whatever you want drops, you go get dat shit. Yeah call me a pirate, but I'm done paying $15 a month for 10 different streaming apps. That money goes toward stacking sats, an example of umbrel helping me save money.

Great, thanks, convincing. Is the umbrel os a linux based? Can I install any software or only what they have in their app store?

Pi5 is great. MiniPC is better for performance and upgradeability if you can afford it. Using Tailscale I'm able to connect to my node anywhere in the world. Much better than using Tor. You can also use PiHole for your local network for blocking adverts. Definitely worth it for PiHole alone honestly.

Thanks. Actually, PiHole is something that got my attention too :)

You can run it in a VM behind your host VPN and works great.

Hopefully a proper backup system. Until then it's completely untrustworthy for any self hosting.

It's been out for years sorta funny to say it's version 1.0

yeah i’m not sure what the 1.0 actually refers to. i guess it could be a new product, but it would be odd if it was just an iteration on their existing software.

But what is "Umbrel"?

It's huge as it abides most of the laws of Bitcoin and above all, of you want self hosting, umbrel is for you.
