A week or so ago I posted once again about my desire for pinned posts in territories. It was the shortest post I have ever made, but it got an embarrassingly high number of sats. I promise to give them all back by zapping hard or directly donating to rewards. As it turns out, I was too impatient, since @k00b pointed out that @ekyzsis is already working on this feature. I was getting impatient because I want to implement my ideas for hopefully improving this territory. Here is what I’m thinking so far:
  • I would like to create a pinned post which is basically an index of original content written by stackers. The content can be non-fiction, fiction, book length, essay length, short stories, poetry...whatever. I will of course honor any wishes not to be included in the index, and I will decide which content to pin. Right now I plan to pin anything that does not have any indicia or sense of having been created through artificial intelligence. They will be broken down either by category, such as book reviews, poetry, etc, or by author. My purpose in creating this post is to publicize and highlight original content to help the authors garner more attention and sats. I would like to make this territory a place where new writers can exercise their chops and build their careers. I know that’s an ambitious goal, but I think it’s worth a try.
  • For the second pinned post, I plan to award the most popular post of the week a pinned position for the following week. How this is calculated might be difficult. What I may do is use the built in SN zaprank calculation for this, to prevent artificially pumping sats to game the system. I’m still trying to figure out how to impliment this. I might just choose the post with the highest SN zap rank each Friday to be next week’s pinned post. Like everything else here, I’m thinking out loud and it’s all subject to change.
  • For the third pinned post, I plan to offer stackers the opportunity to rent the slot for a certain post for a certain amount of sats. I have not come up with a price.
For those stackers who are interested, please reply with comments and suggestions so I can get this right. Everything is subject to change
Thanks
This kind of initiative can really set ~BooksAndArticles apart and serve as an guiding light across territories near and far. I applaud this post re: planning and discussion.
I love the first one and support the second one if the post is exceptional. The third I'm not as sure about because three pinned posts can be a bit much.
As direct traffic grows the top spots become more valuable so it's a tradeoff as to responsibility to curate by hand vs the algorithm. Someone mentioned the description as a good place to put pinnables that shouldn't bump fresh content. Either way, I'm looking forward to see how these plans progress!
reply
As @kr also mentioned, 3 pinned posts is probably too much. I need to give it more thought. I would prefer algorithm re human choice, but that's outside my realm of competence. I know others here can help me with that. As it unfolds I look forward to hearing your opinion and suggestions. As I said, I'm just starting to formulate a plan.

How do you want to do this? We don't have infinite edits (yet), so you won't be able to update your post on a regular basis. Do you want to use comment pins to add more stuff to the index? But those are also limited. Also, it sounds like you're using the term "pin" for including posts in the index.
Maybe I'm just confused since no one else seemed to be confused by this.

👀 I think you just stepped up the territory game with this post.

I also wondered about the mechanics of a pinned post that was "maintained."
You could just rewrite the post every time you have an update (copy and paste + new content) and make a new post to pin, but that sounds clunky.
I wonder if pinned post is not what's needed. Maybe a sticky territory bio that is always visible above territory posts page.
Either way, I love the books and articles territory. I have big plans for all the wordy wonders I'm going to leave there.
reply
You're right. It would be clunky. I tried playing around with the existing territories description box but it is severely size limited and not very visible.
reply
Yes, and when I come to the territory as a returning visitor, I want to see the new posts. I'd probably be more likely to bounce if I saw a full screen of the same static (or slowly changing) post.
Have you thought about doing a weekly round up newsletter like @k00b does for SN?
reply
Yes I have thought of that, but not in this context. That's an excellent idea also. I guess we won't know what works best until we have the tools available and can experiment. A more robust territories page might work. I think @grayruby has talked about this before.
reply
Static bio with logo for territories and pinned posts would be a great start.
Have you noticed some territories dropped off? When I posted the push up challenge a couple days ago, I wanted to post in fitness but I didn't see a fitness territory anymore. This is encouraging. Fitness and Health should be one.
reply
It happened to me too. I went to check chess and radio the other day.
reply
I didn't realize chess was gone. I should message Need on nostr and see if he wants to make his chess posts in sports.
Games and activities could be a sub of sports. We don't have sub territories yet but could essentially create them by labelling the posts for now.
That's why I need your help specifically! Actually I see the index as a collection of links to posts that I will revise and replace on a regular basis. Infinite edits would be infinitely better. Hint, hint

Maybe locked posts could also work (only founders can reply). This way, you could reply to your own post for every new index entry. And you could even delete them individually then. We could update the sorting that if you click on recent again, it sorts by oldest. So you could also have a chronological order.
reply
This would be good. Much smoother than deleting and replacing with an updated post.

And who might @ekyzsis, be? I'm guessing it's @ekzyis's sister for some reason.
Can't we do something similar to the third pinned post, by boosting our posts, already? What are you thinking the difference is there?
I really like that people can have an outlet for original work. I've been thinking a little bit about how to do that with scientific research.
reply
I like how your sassiness about @ekzyis includes to other people's references to him. It runs deep, clearly.

I was drinking when I typed this. (just kidding. I wish I had that excuse)

You've just been in a spiral since you lost your hat. I doubt Sheriff Siggy would have made that mistake.
reply
What??? Siggy lost his hat?
My whole SN worldview has been turned upside down. I need to go do my next set of 25 push ups and then figure out how to pick up the pieces from this news.
reply
There's a new sheriff in town. However, he very suspiciously has an even older cowboy hat than Siggy ever had. Who can guess at the games the upperclass play?
reply
Insider trading.

If grovelling the same? Asking for a friend.
reply
Too much pressure. Constantly looking behind my back.

Well, if someone wants to do (3) and pin his post for some time, you can just unpin (1) temporarily during the period when his post is pinned. That way, you will only have two pinned posts at any point in time.
I think rotating pinned posts might help because I imagine a flurry of contributions once (1) is available. But at some point in time, the thread will become dormant since I doubt we are that prolific haha. It will be quite boring to read a pinned post with hardly any evolvement all the time
reply
Really like these ideas. Especially 2 and 3. I was thinking about how eventually the Stacker Sports daily post should be more about announcements (new pools, pick 'ems, winners, highlighting great posts in the territory) rather than me trying to spur on conversation, which can be done in a different posts but the ability to have a multiple pinned post strategy as you have suggested is one worth thinking about. I think that can in a way accomplish what I was hoping to accomplish eventually with the daily post.

great ideas and all sound like worthy experiments.
my only suggestion would be to run these individually, rather than in parallel to see the effects of each pinned post.
3 pinned posts simultaneously might also be a lot of clutter for people to sift through if they want to see new content.
reply
It's turtles and pinned posts all the way down!
reply
Good point.

Will pinned posts only be visible when you visit the territory or will they also be visible in the home feed ?
reply
I don't know. Maybe @ekzyis can answer if I spell his name right this time.

Only in the territory. Territory founders will have 3 pins per territory and OPs will have 3 pins per post.

Just drop the territory. Territories sucks and will never survive.

It's like when LaBradford Smith talked shit to Michael Jordan.

There is of course that option

Who is anon? I have an idea….

Never did I enjoy getting shit replied as much!!

Well, it’s you who has to manage the comments… lol

Those territories deserving to survive will survive

I'd be happy to do this, but I don't want this identity to be tied to my publishing identity for various reasons. What do you plan to do about that?
reply
You can choose to post under any identity you wish. It seems the risk would be posting the same content here as you do under a different identity elsewhere. Maybe I'm missing the issue. Can you explain further?
reply
So then you are saying it is up to me to make a new identity that no one will recognize but also won't have any post history. Are you going to trust those identities by default?
reply
Bear with me. I'm a little slow on the uptake. I don't think I understand your question. Please explain it to me again as if I'm 5.
reply
So I am assuming you aren't going to post just anything up, and part of your consideration will be a poster's history. New identities don't have any post history so how are you going to decide whether to link their content? (In other words, prevent spam)
reply
Correct, at least at first. A stacker can always contact me if I make a mistake. Crappy posts will get ignored whether they manage to get a link or not, I think. If issues arise I'll cross that bridge. Like other owners, I have to regularly downvote spammers now to keep them under control.
reply
So what avenue are you going to use to be contacted?
reply
Right now, either a public reply or a wallet dm for more private communications.
I need to be paying more attention to this territory, it's like you're building it for me!
reply
Yes I am!
reply
The idea is good! Maybe it is possible to create "sub-territories" in the "BooksAndArticles" territory? To have each author a separate subterritory... Or this is not possible on SN?
reply
You should instigate certain "Series", read books and write reviews about them... Blast the void with content of your own- which will inspire people to give it their own twist.
That's what I'd do if this territory belonged to me: animate the crowd to jump on my bandwagon, and ride into the satty-sunshine together...
