Great article by Nina Teicholtz, available to the public (although she does have a Substack):

Canceling the Science on Saturated Fats

A quote:

In other words, saturated fats are part of important foods that are crucial for health. Specifically, red meat and dairy, are rich and unique sources of essential nutrients that cannot be found elsewhere. Diminishing these foods in our diets will—and in fact already has—resulted in nutritional deficiencies.

Indeed, just this week, a study reported that some 40% of women ages 12-21 in America suffer from iron deficiency, which can result in immunological weakness, decreased energy production, poor cognitive function, and developmental delays in the babies of these women. The type of iron humans can easily absorb (heme) comes not from spinach—sorry, Popeye--but from red meat. (Only about 10 % of the iron in plant foods can be absorbed)

Other nutrients mainly found in meat and dairy in a form that humans can well absorb are vitamins B12, A, and D3 as well as calcium. Avoiding these foods puts us at nutritional risk—a gravely important issue for human health that is inexplicably ignored by most food and nutrition writers today.

I should have mentioned in the original post - Nina Teicholtz is the author of The Big Fat Surprise, an amazing book on the US nutritional guidelines. It will lead you down a rabbit hole that is ultimately very enlightening, and will improve your health dramatically.

I wrote a post on the book - #320715.
