'Jolene' by Dolly Parton
view on m.youtube.comJolene was listed as number 217 on Rolling Stones' list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - but when the list was revised in '21, it jumped from number 217 to number 63 on the list.
Incidentally, Parton wrote Jolene on the same night as writing 'I will always love you' which, when covered by Whitney Houston 19 years later, sold over 24 million copies and topped Billboard 100 for fourteen weeks - Houston's cover became, and remains, the bestselling single for a female artist.
Due to this, Parton received massive royalties.
Dolly refers to the day she wrote both songs as, "a good writing day".

If I were to go to Tennessee, I might even be tempted to visit Dollywood.

I think there was a documentary on her by netflix if I remember right. Was a really good watch.
It was watching a documentary that raised Dolly's profile massively in my mind.
You'd get an idea of her very humble origins - growing up in a shack in the mountains.
Plus if it's a doc that shows interviews, you'll see how stunningly clever, and quick with it, she is too.
Rings a bell about the growing up in the mountains bit but I can't recall it properly. She does seem like a absolute gem of a person though.
Yeah, Dolly had her childhood cabin home carefully taken down & rebuilt as an attraction at Dollywood. Dollywood is a big local employer.
I never got around to mentioning her charity work
Since 1995 her book charity has given over 150 million books to children
Last year her monthly free book giveaways total 2 million books posted each month.

Jay-z was not an artist I was expecting from you GR! My first introduction into Jay-z and his talent was via Linkin Park. After really listening to the guy I have a lot of respect for the work he puts in, super talented artist.
I like all kinds of music. Jay Z and Kanye was one of the best live shows I have seen.
Kanye, pre... Current Kanye was phenomenal, rap/hip-hop isn't really something I'm overly familiar with but tracks like "black skinhead" "stronger" and the like are lyrically fantastic. The dude was a master at his craft.
It's always funny when someone gets known for being a fan of a particular genre, and then shows to also have an affinity for a genre that some would say is the polar opposite.
Eg I pulled into car park at work the other day and my colleagues know i like the "screamy screamy scary music" as they call it. And what I was actually listening to at that point. "Bring him home" from Les Miserables 🤣.
Good music is good music.

It was the Colm Wilkinson version. But I got a lot of time for Hugh Jackman's rendition as well. He did it very well.
Hugh did a great job and Colm is the legend but I gotta support my fellow Canadian.
view on www.youtube.comI guess fundamentally, there's a reason why artists like Kanye, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, Biggy etc are as famous as they are or have as many fans of their music as they do. And it's because their music is good. It may not be everyone's favourite thing, but it's top quality. Hell, I like ice cream, my personal favourite, rum and raisin. But if you gimme mint choc I'm not complaining, I'm enjoying the ice cream. Different flavours same thing.

😂😂 almost. Gaga is a phenomenal musician, she's super talented, her writings great. I know she's not to everyone's tastes and is a bit out there. But from a talent point of view, she's got it in buckets full.
