Options:
- just point your wallet app to a well known/trusted node. It is nothing wrong with using an "uncle Jim" node. Many out there.
- Use your wallet app with a neutrino node and check only the headers. Neutrino is not revealing any private info, is just delivering blocks info.
- use trustedcoin light version of sync, by fiatjaf https://github.com/nbd-wtf/trustedcoin
these are great options, thanks

Check this out, an "uncle Jim" by hardcore bitcoiners, services offered by Bitcoin Barcelona Group:

question for @pillar - is possible that the Bitcoin node offered to connect to is also running neutrino?
For all those newbies that can't run their own node or users like you in trouble, you can very well use these kind of servers to connect to.
Try also BTCD https://github.com/btcsuite/btcd

I don't think the Core is open for external connection, only the Electrum server.
You can hit the guys at bitcoinbarcelona.xyz for more info.

Of course, of course, I fully agree it's possible. I'm just saying I don't think it is properly set up right now.
