Here's a couple examples of how newcomers are treated when they don't conform to the idiocy of bitcoin supremacism:
The only motivation I can see for such hatred is that they have great stake in BTC and feel attacked when someone considers alternatives. How am I going to develop for Aleph.im without the "shitcoin" ALEPH? How am I going to do illegal things without XMR?
I use this site less and less because I see more of this dehumanization, tribalization, idiocy. I wish I could stay. I hope it gets better in a while. Much love to the devs, keep up the good fight.
You may have seen this. It's old, but has aged quite well, I think:

I like this.
But it's also worth asking: what exactly is the essence of the garden that will die if it's not tended? Is it fealty to the btc religion, as revealed unto us by the self-proclaimed prophets?
Or is it something else?
reply
fealty
Must admit: I had to look that up. :)
Or is it something else?
I sure hope it's something else. We have enough self-proclaimed prophets outside of btc life, that I think we can do without them here.
At least SN holds the promise of discovering (inventing?) that something else with its evolving incentive structures, so we don't have to rely on moderators and ban-hammers to keep it fun here.

I believe that one of the easiest ways to grow the bitcoin user base is to onboard "shitcoiners". Many just don't have the required knowledge about bitcoin yet. You'd be surprised by how many see the price of bitcoin and think they just missed the boat, and start looking for the "next bitcoin". So yeah, I think we really need to be more welcoming to them. After all, don't hate the sinner, hate the sin. :)

IMHO if SN end goals were to create a circular economy & build a better reddit/hackernews with sats as an incentive then we must preach "STAYING HUMBLE" more than "STACKING SATS" thats should be our most important principle right ??? Right ???
SN is still an echo chamber to even LN community, let alone shitcoiners or even normies. People are not gonna step out of their comfy couch very quickly.
Be patience guys, try to welcome newcomers warmly, because objectively shitcoiners are closer to us than a complete normie.
We all want the best for us, money or fame or whatever, but in doing so lots of people falls into trading scam, shitcoin rug, etc etc
Imagine how many extra years we must suffer this fiat slavery when every newcomers is not welcomed warmly, get bitter & never came back with bad seed planted on their mind

I am the "new user" mentioned in the bio post. Thanks a lot for bringing this up @Michelson_Morley.
@DarthCoin 's profile has many well-researched posts. He is undoubtedly a valuable resource for this community, and I am learning a lot from him. I try to focus on the content of someone's message, rather than the delivery. But I will admit that I felt annoyed and put off when I saw that as the first reply to my bio, and I wonder how many would have left there and then.
One last point. The 'nyms we choose have meaning. They signify what we value and what we aspire to be. Michelson and Morley were physicists who in their quest for the truth disproved the luminiferous aether and advanced mankind's understanding of physics. My own 'nym is Chinese for "to seek, to inquire, to interrogate". By adopting these nyms we profess our desire to seek the truth, and to have the courage to stand behind it.

Yes, M&M disproved the theory of a universe of aether. I was an ethereum programmer but lost faith in the structure of ethereum, thus my name :) Sorry for dragging you into drama, it's really very rare on this site.
I just don't appreciate local microcelebrities like @DarthCoin who are never wrong, and rarely have anything to say except "screw you, you're an idiot". Proud people, righteous, judgemental. Bullies, they bore me.
A rarity on the site, as I said. Enjoy your stay. Maybe I'll see you on nostr :)

Hubris always comes before the fall.
I can feel you, since I also went through the same. I came here to learn and got some good advices too. But there are lots of people with lots of viewpoints. I started to slowly ignore bullies here. In my opinion, Knowledge grants you kindness to spread.
I am also using this site less than when I started, but still this site is full of good advices, easily searchable too. At least for now. Hope you have a good time ahead. :)

I appreciate you flagging this. I don't like excessive rudeness myself.
We aren't giving people enough defenses from this kind of stuff yet - clearly. @lightcoin wrote up some requests around this: https://github.com/stackernews/stacker.news/issues/256.

Being proud of some knowledge you have, does it make you wiser? What's the point of it. Fun? Maybe it is. I hope so!

If you feel offended because I called you and your buddy shitcoiners, IT'S YOUR PROBLEM not mine. That means YOU are a shitcoiner and you need to fix that problem.
If you still have some brains cells, you will understand my words and come to the light.

I'm not offended at all. Would you be offended if a 20 something year old told you that you're a "big meany"? You have consistently explained nothing, while at the same time writing "you would understand what I mean if you were smart".

Well.... Calling them altcoins doesn't really describe other coins that well. Maybe some take it too far, IDK.
But really, name one coin that isn't a scam or something that comes close to bitcoin. There isn't one.
Not defending these guys, but its nice to have a long form platform to talk about bitcoin. You can mute the voices you don't want to hear too
