Through lots of discussions about economics, assets vs usd, and lots of reading my spouse is sufficiently orange-pilled to try living on the bitcoin standard and moving away from banks (for the most part). As of right now the plan is to keep our mortgage payments and utilities in usd in a small local bank, credit union, or even a goldbacks account so that money is harder too. (they are still concerned with volatility and want to be safe, I can understand that so we will ease in. ) However for groceries, kids classes, extra money, and savings we will be using BTC. I have a couple questions that I hope to get solved or solutions for:
  1. Budgeting, we use the envelop method to make our dollars work for us and ensure they all have work they are filling. Is there a good self-hosted budgeting app that can help us manage utxo's, envelop budgeting, and be able to see balances of lightning and on-chain accounts as well? The idea is my wife and I will both have our own wallets for personal spending (we each have some "fun money" that the other doesn't need to see/be concerned about, mine has always gone into stacking sats and the occasional farming supplies for our homestead) I want to have a lightning wallet for both of us to share for buying groceries, paying peers for services/goods etc children's classes, etc. (i'm evaluating rotki right now because taxes are builtin which is nice, I have 3 kids so have to make sure i'm paying taxes so I don't get thrown in prison or anything until we all move to el salvador, puerto rico, or portugal someday :D I know @darthcoin may disapprove of the taxes thing :D )
  2. Ripcord: My spouse will also more than likely need a ripcord option (i'm thinking cash or strike where they can quickly transfer some sats and make a fiat purchase for kids/homeschooling supplies at places that we haven't worn down enough to buy bitcoin) is there a better option here?
  3. Can anyone point me to the @darthcoin links for online services that accept bitcoin for things like travel, hotels, etc. I want to support all of these services that we can which natively support bitcoin.
Is there anything else I need to worry about/consider? I want this to go as seamlessly as possible, my spouse is very intelligent but less tech-savy than myself, so I want to reduce the barrier to entry and make this as easy as possible.
As of now i'll be using a workflow like this:
Bitwage will transfer utilities and mortage amounts with a small buffer to the bank and the rest will go as btc a samurai wallet to whirlpool all the bitcoin. Savings will go to our hardware wallet, groceries and other envelops will go to a shared lightning wallet and the wife and I will have personal money go to another lightning wallet.
Spouse will have a cashapp, strike, or other option here as a ripcord, but I will continue to leverage/ask folks they interact with to accept bitcoin properly.
Any and all feedback is welcome, can't wait to make this happen!
Best of luck look forward to hearing about it 🙂
