There's nothing your enemies will hate more than you loving them so much they love you back.
reply
I always had in my mind a distant meaning for "enemy"; never considered anyone at this level. When I was a kid there were real fights and struggles in the school but, nowadays I think "enemy" is really a strong word. Unless someone wants to eliminate you, I cannot see as an enemy. As long as I know, nobody wants to get rid of me. No enemies then =) Oh yes bureaucrats and government but, we've little to do with it.
reply
Wrote down this quote the other day, “Let the currents move beneath you. It plays in your favor. Powers will shift enemies can vanish. Time will do the rest.” It truly is the perfect way to look at things.

This really sounds too good to be true -- what about crushing them entirely? They'll hate that less? Idk. Big if true.

Most people are still so used to dropping links like in the fiat platform, for getting traffic or clicks.
Dropping links without any engagement in a room full of smart people is a waste IMHO.
reply
imo this is a +1 for adding a comment option/requirement to link posts.
i think many coming to SN to market their own stuff are sharing links and leaving. a brief explanation of why their link matters will either prompt people to engage more deeply or not share their link at all.
it also has a side benefit of nudging people to read and understand the third-party links they share on here. i find myself sharing links here as fast as possible, often before even reading a single word.

definitely racing to be first.
one of the undesirable consequences though, is that if i’m sharing an article from someone who i know is reputable (but on a topic i know nothing about), it’s highly unlikely that i’ll have anything useful to add when other people make comments… and that can sometimes be the difference between a thread that dies and one that thrives.
its much better if someone competent in the subject matter is the one to post the article.

ᕦ(ò_óˇ) Day 6 of exercising everyday before the saloon opens
Got up before the alarm today. It was raining and I thought: "Did I jinx it? Just yesterday I asked myself what I would do if it rains. So far, I always had good weather. I hope I am just going to put on a good jacket and go outside anyway."
Then it stopped raining. But I was pretty sure I would have gone to the calisthenics park anyway. However, maybe because it was only a little bit of rain. Have to wait for the first time heavy rain in the morning to really test my streak.
The push-ups (still elevated) were already a lot easier. Did the same workout as on Day 2 except I integrated knee raises into it (and not only did some at the end).
I also asked someone if they have an idea how I could do hyperextensions here. I like training my back (especially as a developer it's good, I think) and I once had an accident where I fell through the roof of a parking space onto stairs to a cellar with my back. That hurt and the first question the EMS on the phone had was if I could still move my feet. Fortunately, I could.
In the hospital, they said I must have fallen like a cat since I got very lucky. They said (iirc) that my back muscles did hold my lumbar spine good in place. So I did not break any vertebrae (getting paralyzed in the process); just two spinous process (I hope this is the right term, we call it "Wirbelsäulenfortsatz" in German). My lower back muscles also helped during the recovery. I recovered fully except that I still have a electrical sensation when I touch a specific spot at the lower side of my body. But I consider this to just be a kind reminder that I shouldn't do such stupid things like climbing on roofs anymore, lol. Or at least be more careful. I fell through it since I didn't look that I was only stepping on the metal bars, not on the tin plastic.
The person said there is no good spot for hyperextensions but there are other exercises for the lower back. Then he showed me some which was very nice! I decided to do some supermans and hold them for one minute with roughly 30s breaks. Did 3 of those.
Next time, I'll also integrate them into my workout or do more of them at the end.
I wanted to take a picture of the calisthenics park for SN but I forgot. Next time.

Agreed probably best doing them at the end - you don’t want to fatigue your core before doing some of those compound moves as it’s important for maintaining good form (ie the squats / press ups etc)
Ah, didn't think of that when I said "do more of them at the end", ha
Or it was intuition? ;)
Thanks for the tips! Much appreciated.

You are welcome! Keep at it.

I already feel that it's harder to not go than to go :) Using the saloon as a personal accountability as @orthwyrm said here seems to really work for me.
I also can tell that my sleep improved by a lot (I got up before the alarm today). I also go to bed earlier since I know that I must go outside and be back around 12pm. So I can't stay up too late. I kind of want to go to bed early so I can get up early so I can be back early so I can continue working on SN in a refreshed state, lol
reply
People almost don’t want to believe how important sleep is to improving quality of life, health and wellness, and that’s why we ‘cheat’ it. Find the best number of hours for you and stick to them - it pays dividends.

I am also looking forward to going outside tomorrow :)
I think I'll take the train to outskirts of the city I haven't been to yet. And then walk back from there for 1-2h.
I also really like that I can say that I already exercised and my day hasn't even really started yet. Surprisingly, you have more energy for the rest of the day.
I still know too well how bad it feels when all you did during a day was to sedate yourself with YouTube or other mindless stuff. Then you also have nothing to dream about.

We do. Makes me think that ALL our efforts should be directed towards helping the most needy, for charitable and selfish reasons.
reply
Charity always has those two sides. And for many it’s easy to give money but it removes you from the act of directly giving time or energy.
I have had some of my most rewarding life experiences as a volunteer in charity projects. In many cases the volunteers are as broken as the clients!
reply
I have been slowly trying to break away from only passive donation. My wife does local meals on wheels (delivering meals to impoverished seniors) and we're starting soup kitchen work, but would like it to be bitcoin based.
reply
Well done! The meal is only half the issue with meals-on-wheels… governments fractured our families and made us dependent on the state and it creates loneliness in the elderly which visits, like meals-on-wheels, can help alleviate.
Not sure where Bitcoin fits specifically….. I’ll tell you the story of the ‘contactless debit card machine homeless guy’ another time. Just trying to make his way and adopt a technology he though would help.

Hey Nemo, Yep. I don’t know. Are downzaps helping? Is it enough. I tend to call bots out when I see them but downzapping just feels wasteful. It’s sharing sats to the ‘best’ Stackers but is it better to just zap content we like? Thinking about a post and then comment verification process to deter bots? Sorry for the stream of consciousness - I really don’t know is all I know lol.

I completely agree re the questionable worth of flagging or downzapping. It’s easier for me to mute but it’s not helping the community. We may help ‘tenderfeet’ but I would imagine most of us are on ‘Wild West’ mode anyway.
And whilst downzaps do end up in rewards that is only shared with the top 1/3 and I would rather reward the interesting content from my perspective than the consensus since I already contribute to rewards each morning.

If an item has upzaps, downzaps are subtracted from the upzaps - it's a tug of war, a war of trust and sats. So that's one possible explanation - other people upzapped it. Another is that when you downzapped before, other people had already downzapped it.

is there a difference if I downzap something with 100 sats at once, or if I downzap it twice with 50?
No difference. It works just like upzaps. We consider the entire zap amount as a whole and even end up using some basic algebra to do this.
that is why I started to wonder whether the unpaywall comment does not count towards the the upvote of those specific posts
Outlawing does not consider comments. Only upzaps and downzaps.
reply

reply
It could be a bug.
If it's not a bug, other reasons: If those 20 sats came from someone whom everyone trusts 2-3x more than you, it'd cost you >10k sats to outlaw it on your own. If the difference is even higher, it'd cost you >100k.
Also you're all gaining or losing trust everyday depending on what you're upzapping and downzapping. If you had an easier time outlawing before, it might be that you lost some trust.
but I found that I ended up sinking a good 500 sats in each of those posts
now, do you remember my words?

Yes, I much appreciate the input.
Part of the plan with personalized feeds is that nuking is relative to the logged in stacker. Posts will only be seen as outlawed by people who trust the downzappers, but to people who don't they will still see the posts. So this is another thing to imagine as we troubleshoot.
