Good morning stackers!
It's Monday again so that means I'm coming for your musical preferences.
Shill me your favourite COVER version of a track. I know covers can be divisive as a lot of music purists like to keep the OG untouched and unspoiled.
For the purpose of today's exercise, let's take a look at what a different artists perspective and interpretation brings to a track as opposed to dismissing covers a thoughtless rip offs of real talent. (Don't get me wrong some of them are for sure. But there are also lazy tracks for some talented artists. Looking at you Rhianna with "Work". I'm fairly sure there was zero work put into that track.)
Anywho, here's mine and here's what I think it brings to the track.
Nightwish - Phantom of the Opera.
The way Tarja and Marko show the dichotomy of the characters is fantastic. Markos voice has such a dark sound it makes the phantom almost creepy. The metal vibe adds more meat to the bone of the track without detracting from it. A heavier sound really brings the impression of danger or threat to life for the phantom. Considering phantom of the opera is musical theatre, Nightwish's cover of the title track really does bring some added theatre to it.
Bonus listening/watching. Take a look at Floor Jansen and Henke Poort singing the same track for a Dutch TV series "Beste Zanger". Bonus points to those who know that Henke did infact play the Phantom in a Dutch production, touring across Europe.
Have fun with it.

I played this Sharon den Adel track over and over back in the day

Sharon's voice is beautiful. Her doing somewhere with Anneke Van geirsbergen is hauntingly beautiful.

Great track. Has a similar vibe to Emma Hewitt - Be your sound.

Definitely hear the resemblance now you mention it. Wouldn't have put that together had we not had this discussion. Cheers for that!

Yes, loved this track when they dropped it. Hydra album wasn't it? Was it a cover? I never realised it was. Who did the original?
reply
It's not a unique version (a bit heavier, more guitar driven) but I found this cover of Duran Duran's "Come Undone" that I like by a band called Cavo.
Oddly enough I was searching for a different cover of that song when I found this one. I used to play and promote shows in Toronto in mid 2000s and a band I knew did a good cover of that song but for the life of me I couldn't remember the name of the band so I started searching and came up empty but found this band's version instead.

Singer reminds me of the dude from poets of the fall. Shannon Roc gives me riot era Hayley Williams flashbacks. The sound is very 2000s rock. And I don't mean that in a derogatory way.
reply
Yeah I think 2000s rock sums them up pretty good. They have a couple other decent songs but they are a bit too much of that "post grunge" sound for me. They are doing an album of just covers and released 4 songs on spotify, all 80s covers so maybe they found a niche in rocking up popular 80s tunes. I had not heard of them until I found the come undone cover but apparently they did have a bit of success in late 2000s, toured with STP and Daughtry.
reply
Speaking of daughtry did you catch their cover with Lzzy hale doing separate ways? Banger. Really good.
You come across nonpoint on your travels? I'm enjoying their version of "when doves cry", but their "in the air tonight" is great.
reply
No, I haven't heard it. Will check it out.

Bonamassa, Clapton, Hendrix and Santana might be my favourite guitarists ever. It's difficult to choose between them.
Another wicked talented guitarist (very different vibe though) was Alexi Laiho, RIP. Fantastic guitarist who understood his genre and instrument.
reply
Another very different vibe, but just as talented a guitarist:
Loving this thread, btw.

I'm going to try and bring a meta Music Monday every Monday. It does seem to be getting received well.
Re: Richard Smith doing the entertainer. What a complex piece, he makes it look like child's play.
You may like https://youtu.be/ZunTLndtJtw really good fun from the showhawk duo live in Edinburgh 2013. I gotta get myself to the Edinburgh music festival at some point I've heard it's a great event.
reply
That was quite the rabbit hole, thanks. Never heard of these lads before. Fantastic.
reply
Never thought I'd hear club classics on acoustic guitar but well... Here we are... And I am here for it.

Daaaaamn dude, this is great. Joe Bonamassa is one of the most talented guitarists ever. He understands the song he's playing and it really shows in the inflection he uses on his playing. I'd never heard of Beth Hart before, but what wonderful vocals, soft and gentle when required but more than capable of getting up there and adding power and grit. Wicked performance. Thank you for your suggestion.

I'm enjoying this, it's very chill. I loved the water droplets sound effect appearing throughout. I was getting ska/reggae vibes through it with the trumpets and the staccato piano chord stuff. That base is gunna blow out some car windows if I'm not careful for sure 🤣. Thanks for the suggestion.

Wow - Nightwish reference makes this place even cooler. I saw them in concert recently (amazing but sadly no Marko) and one of their support acts were a high energy European metal group called Beast in Black and they have done a decent cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘They don’t care about us’ which chnages the songs point of view in my opinion.
But for a true cover which meets your criteria; ‘Hurt’ by Johnny Cash (covering Nine Inch Nails) - similar delivery maybe but at the same time completely transformed.
reply
I've been fortunate enough to see nightwish through all their iterations, their live performances never disappoint. They are fantastic live. I'm also a Beast in Black fan. Yannis does his own cover on YouTube of "ghost love score" well worth checking out.
Hurts a fantastic track, great choice!
reply
That’s awesome - very jealous of your Nightwish experiences. They are even better live than I expected.
Have heard the Ghost Love Score cover. Very good but not Floor…
reply
Only floor can be floor. Absolutely one of a kind. I'm glad you enjoyed them live, they're such fantastic musicians I feel they should be much more recognised than they are.

I'm liking this. I like the way they've used (synth maybe, or possibly a trumpet effect) and added a sustain to it for the two note bit instead of guitar picked strings. It flows nicely throughout and the sustain makes the whole track sound quite floaty and chill. It's a very different interpretation of Nirvana's and I'm good with that. Thanks for the recommendation.
