It depends. There has been a recent trend of locking guys up with 8-10 year contracts but I would say 4-5 years is about average.

That feels like a very long time - could be the best years of your career - to be committed to a single team.
I understand the need to have lock ins on contracts but usually thats a bargaining tool / asset when selling or loaning players to other teams.
