Just a poll for today. Last night I watched Shohei Ohtani crush a game tying homerun in the bottom of the 7th inning. His 35th of the year putting him on pace for 60. He is running away with the MVP with his hitting numbers alone. Oh and by the way he is also an all star caliber pitcher. He is the best baseball player I have ever seen play.
But the Angels kind of suck and Ohtani is a free agent. Does he get traded?

I watched him strike out Mike Trout to win the World Baseball Classic this year while I was in Japan...was a surreal moment.

That was a thrilling moment. It makes me think about the pitch clock in the playoffs. Don't get me wrong, I like the pitch clock, but there are those rare moments like that one that you see in October baseball where the game is on the line and a bit of time to build suspense is a positive. I hope they don't change the clock for playoffs but maybe add additional time outs and step offs to ensure enough time in the most crucial moments for the players to be at their best.

i think he's gone after this season. he's got to be the number 1 free agent, and everyone is going to go after him. my money is on the dodgers
reply
I agree. I think the Dodgers are the most likely fit. It would be nice to see him stay with the Angels but they can't seem to put a contender together despite having the best two players on the planet (well I guess Trout is hurt too much now to still be in the top 2 but he is still elite).

I don’t follow the game these days but have looked him up. He has done a lot for the game - especially promoting it in Japan.
Is 5-years with the same team usual these days?
reply
It depends. There has been a recent trend of locking guys up with 8-10 year contracts but I would say 4-5 years is about average.
reply
That feels like a very long time - could be the best years of your career - to be committed to a single team.
I understand the need to have lock ins on contracts but usually thats a bargaining tool / asset when selling or loaning players to other teams.
