Great responses for the best venue question. I really appreciate everyone who is commenting and sharing. A little curveball (good old uncle charlie- iykyk) for you today. Still sports adjacent but:
Shill me the best sports movie you have ever seen.
10 sats for all replies. More for great responses and a bonus 100 sats if I have never seen it.
Good question.
So I could say; Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Moneyball, I, Tonya, The Wrestler.
It could be Steve McQueen classic Le Man.
But actually for me it has to be ‘Ford vs Ferrari’. Well acted, well directed and excellent sequences..
reply
10 sats for responding. 100 sats because I have never seen I, Tonya or Le Man and 50 sats for naming so many great movies. Ford vs Ferrari was excellent.

There are so many good baseball movies - probably more than any other sport - but it shouldn’t matter which sport it is as it really comes down to the story.
For laughs it has to be between Caddy Shack or Major League…
reply
Yes, lots of good baseball movies. Some good football movies too.

Concussion with Will Smith is excellent. Disturbing but excellent.
Does MAS*H count as a football or a golf movie?
reply
Yeah Concussion is great.
What did you meant by MAS*H. MASH the tv show?
reply
MAS*H the movie featured the main stars desperately, and unsuccessfully, trying to play golf and the conclusion is a free for all football match. The actor Timothy Green (?) actually played 9 years for the Philadelphia Eagles. I just remember the final football match as a kid.
And for another wartime sporting epic; Escape to Victory with Michael Caine.

Slapshot

Haha awesome movie.
Siggy you are practically Canadian with you love for hockey. Did you play?
reply
I did, in high school. I wasn't great, but I loved it. It's by far my favorite sport.
reply
Awesome. I used to play shinny (I don't know if they use that term outside of Canada- essentially a pick up game at a local outdoor rink) with friends as a kid but never played in a league or school. I am not a good skater. Fine for just pleasure skating but not good enough for hockey. I was more into baseball as a kid. Played rep baseball and in highschool. I was a pitcher and catcher (jokes write themselves-haha).
reply
I read the term shinny in books. I guess we played it without using the term. When local ponds would freeze we would play after school.
reply
Yeah that's pretty much the idea. I usually played goalie since I sucked at skating. I was a decent goalie though. We didn't always have goalies though, depends who played. We had a couple guys that played goalie in league and would bring a crappy set of pads, blocker and glove. If we didn't have goalie equipment I would play defense and stay back by the net as a pseudo goalie. A few years ago a couple buddies and I went and played with the local high school kids who always played picked up hockey and they absolutely trounced us, even though my buddies used to be really good players.

Same here! My reflexes hid a lack of talent. Those reflexes are long gone.

Any thoughts on Slap Shot 2? :D
reply
I have never seen it. If any of you guys are interested in an actual, real life slapshot type documentary, watch Netflix "Untold: Crime & Penalties" about the Danbury Thrashers. Absolutely crazy story.
reply
Probably best you don’t. It is considered one of the worst sequel movies of all time…. And there is a lot of competition for that title!

Rocky!
reply
Of course.

I like Cobra Kai and Ted Lasso more than any sports movies.
My favorite sports movie is either Basketball, Talladega Nights, or Semi-Pro.
reply
Haha both good movies. Ricky Bobby and Jackie Moon. Classic characters.
I like both Cobra Kai and Ted Lasso as well.
reply
There are a handful of Ricky Bobby lines my wife and I use regularly: primarily, "If you ain't first you're last."

*BASEketball
reply
Haha. I went to see BASEketball in the theatre. I don't know if I would rank it with top sports movies though.
reply
I haven't seen it since I was in high-school, but I remember thinking it was genuinely hilarious. Maybe it doesn't belong on the same level as the Will Ferrel entries.
