On the back of the 3rd party Reddit charging saga, another small Dev team has been sent a legal letter.
YouTube's legal team contacted the Invidious Devs suggesting that they had violated their Terms of Service whilst using their API.
However, one Dev stated on their github 'issues' page that Invidious has never used YTs API nor have they ever agreed to any of their ToS.
It's a strange situation having all of these frontend clients being threatened at about the same time. I'm wondering if some sort of precedent is wanting to be set.
Hopefully it gets sorted out - seemingly my favorite Reddit frontend (Redreader) was given the chance to carry on after seemingly friendly dialogue. Hopefully Invidious might too - but this project does seem less willing to engage...
As for coincidence I think the common denominator is not legal but financial. Interest rates are up and attention is now focusing on profits which depend heavily on pricing power. If these companies can't monetize better they're going to quickly become unprofitable so here they're taking their medicine... and feeding it to consumers.
The party is coming to an end so it's time to get home and make sure you can get up and go to work and pay your rent and grocery bills.

Huh, you may be right. Certainly about newly acquired and smaller Reddit at least.
I find it funny that there has been a 'Streisand Effect' in that people who weren't aware of these front-ends before the lawyers made their move are aware of these possibilities now.

This time it's Invidious. In the past they already took down the youtube-dl repo. Bibliogram also suffered the same fate. They also fight by changing API so frequently so that those clients have to constantly catch up. This is inevitable. Those frontends are a temporary workaround but ultimately we'd have to migrate out of those centralized silos or play by their rules. When will Twitter ban Nitter next?

Reddit is dead

If you think reddit is dead then you sir have lost.
What reddit is doing in web3 and the direction they are going is revolutionary... go and do some research I guarantee you will change your mind.

Are you perhaps referring to their NFT strategy?
If not, would you mind giving a bit more context? Sounds interesting...
